The San Francisco 49ers play in the NFC West. This hub brings together the club’s official roster, player profiles, and related coverage.
The roster at a glance
The source lists 85 active, practice-squad, and reserve-list entries after released and transferred entries are excluded; 53 carry its ACT designation. An active-roster label is not a guarantee that a player will dress for a particular game.
Linked player names below open individual profiles. The roster was checked on September 20, 2026. It is a dated roster snapshot, not a game-day inactive report.
Why 1946 and 1950 both appear in 49ers history
The 49ers began playing in 1946 in the All-America Football Conference, then entered the NFL in 1950 after the AAFC closed. The earlier seasons are part of the club’s history, but they were played in a different league. An NFL-only record and a franchise history can therefore have different starting points without describing different teams.
The nickname is older than the team’s NFL membership. Founding partner Allen Sorrell suggested 49ers in reference to the gold seekers who traveled west. It does not mean the football team started in 1949.
San Francisco name, Santa Clara home
The team’s main home venues trace its movement around the Bay Area:
Kezar Stadium, 1946–1970 seasons: the original home in San Francisco, covering both AAFC and early NFL years.
Candlestick Park, 1971–2013: the next San Francisco home, associated with the club’s championship rise.
Levi’s Stadium, from 2014: the newer home in Santa Clara.
Levi’s Stadium is a separate building from Candlestick, and Santa Clara is a different city from San Francisco. The club retained its San Francisco 49ers name. For a visit or a game listing, use the venue location rather than assuming the team name is the stadium’s city.
Was The Catch in the Super Bowl?
No. Joe Montana’s touchdown pass to Dwight Clark came at Candlestick in the NFC Championship Game on January 10, 1982, during the 1981 season. San Francisco beat Dallas 28–27 to reach its first Super Bowl.
The catch was not the final play. Clark’s touchdown tied the score, Ray Wersching’s extra point put the 49ers ahead, and the defense still had to stop Dallas’ last possession. Two weeks later, on January 24, San Francisco beat Cincinnati 26–21 in Super Bowl XVI.
The results archive below begins in 1999, well after those breakthrough games. It provides the later season-by-season record; it does not cover the AAFC years, Kezar or the first championship teams.

Play and drive totals cover 49 completed games across 32 teams. Games counted can differ by team. Rates use summed outcomes and opportunities; no minimum attempts apply. A missing value in any counted game withholds that metric. These are dated covered-game figures, not a complete season.

First-down total unavailable: at least one counted game has incomplete first-down flags.
First downs count the play record's total flags, including recorded penalty awards; they can differ from drive summaries. Conversion attempts use recorded converted and failed down flags, including flagged kneels. Nullified downs, punts and field goals are not inferred attempts.
Inside-20 drives have a recorded down starting closer than 20 yards from the opponent's goal line. Reaching only the 20 is excluded. Only touchdowns for the possessing team on those drives count. This definition is not an official league red-zone ranking.
Possession includes overtime. Time is minutes:seconds; per-game time is rounded to the nearest second. Possession share divides the team's recorded seconds by the full elapsed time of its counted games, including overtime. Rates use summed opportunities and zero opportunities have no percentage. Equal displayed values share a rank; rankings describe only the matching supplied teams. — = not supplied.
Regular-season record and points; postseason shows how each run ended. Expected W is the win total implied by points scored and allowed (Pythagorean expectation, exponent 2.37); the small figure is actual minus expected, where +1 or more suggests close-game luck. From WHYNFL's results archive, which begins in 1999, counted by franchise (Raiders include Oakland, Chargers San Diego, Rams St. Louis). Splits cover the regular season and playoffs: night games kick off at 7 pm Eastern or later (games without a listed kickoff are left out), and one-score games are decided by 8 points or fewer.
