Iowa State experience behind the final draft pick
Brock Purdy’s position at the end of the 2022 NFL Draft can obscure how much college experience he brought with him. He finished his Iowa State career with 46 consecutive starts and became the school’s first quarterback to start four bowl games. When he left after the 2021 season, he owned or shared 32 school records, including career passing yards and touchdown passes.
The 2020 season offered an early example of his contribution beyond a passing total. Purdy earned first-team All-Big 12 recognition, finished second on the Cyclones in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, and was the Fiesta Bowl’s offensive MVP in the win over Oregon. The San Francisco 49ers selected him 262nd overall in 2022, pairing a late-round draft investment with an extensively tested college starter.
How a late rookie opportunity became a playoff run
Purdy took over San Francisco’s offense during Week 13 of the 2022 season after Jimmy Garoppolo was injured. His first start came against Tampa Bay on December 11, and he went on to win all five of his regular-season starts. He became the first 49ers quarterback to win his first five NFL starts, throwing at least two touchdown passes in each.
On January 14, 2023, he became the franchise’s first rookie quarterback to start a playoff game. The 41–23 victory over Seattle included 332 passing yards, three touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown from Purdy. That combination made him the first rookie quarterback in the Super Bowl era with at least three passing touchdowns and a rushing score in a postseason game.
From a full-season passing record to an NFC comeback
In 2023, his first full season as the starter, Purdy set San Francisco single-season records with 4,280 passing yards and a 113.0 passer rating. The two measures capture different aspects of that season: the yardage reflects total passing production, while passer rating combines completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdown rate and interception rate.
The ensuing playoff run also illustrated the value of his rushing contribution. Against the Detroit Lions on January 28, 2024, Purdy added 48 yards on five carries to his 267 passing yards. San Francisco overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to win the NFC Championship Game 34–31 and advance to Super Bowl LVIII. That game is a useful reminder that his passing line alone does not describe every way he helped move the offense.
