The Arizona Cardinals play in the NFC West. This hub brings together the club’s official roster, player profiles, and related coverage.
The roster at a glance
The source lists 79 active, practice-squad, and reserve-list entries after released and transferred entries are excluded; 53 carry its ACT designation. An active-roster label is not a guarantee that a player will dress for a particular game.
Linked player names below open individual profiles. The roster was checked on September 20, 2026. It is a dated roster snapshot, not a game-day inactive report.
Chicago roots, St. Louis years and the Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals trace their club roots to the Morgan Athletic Club in Chicago in 1898. They became a charter member of the league that developed into the NFL in 1920. Those dates describe different milestones: the club existed before the league did.
The early Racine Street Cardinals name refers to a Chicago street. The Cardinals nickname grew from the red shade of used jerseys acquired by founder Chris O’Brien. It predates the team’s arrival in Arizona by decades.
A relocation in 1988, a name change in 1994
Chicago, through 1959: the franchise’s original home and the setting for its early NFL championship teams.
St. Louis, 1960–1987: the football Cardinals’ second home.
Phoenix Cardinals, 1988–1993: the franchise moved to Arizona and played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe.
Arizona Cardinals, from 1994: the broader state name replaced Phoenix while the team remained in the same region.
The 1994 rename was not a second move into Arizona. Older Chicago, St. Louis and Phoenix results belong to the same football franchise that now uses the Arizona name.
Why Tempe and Glendale both appear in the stadium story
Sun Devil Stadium hosted the Cardinals after their 1988 arrival. In 2006 they moved to the new stadium in Glendale, known as University of Phoenix Stadium during its early years. It became State Farm Stadium in 2018. That later sponsorship change renamed the Glendale building; it did not create another stadium or move the team back to Phoenix.
What the championship and playoff dates mean
The franchise is credited with NFL championships in 1925 and 1947, both during its Chicago era and before the Super Bowl existed. The 2008 Cardinals won the NFC championship and reached Super Bowl XLIII, where Pittsburgh won 27–23 in February 2009. A conference title and a Super Bowl victory are different results.
The results archive below begins with the 1999 season, so it leaves out much of this history. One easy-to-miss example is the 20–7 playoff win at Dallas on January 2, 1999. That game belongs to the 1998 season and ended the club’s playoff-win drought dating to 1947. Its calendar date does not put it inside an archive that starts with the 1999 season.

Plays & drives across covered games
UPDATEDUpdated Oct 4, 2026, 10:47 am EDT
Play and drive totals cover 49 completed games across 32 teams. Games counted can differ by team. Rates use summed outcomes and opportunities; no minimum attempts apply. A missing value in any counted game withholds that metric. These are dated covered-game figures, not a complete season.

First downs count the play record's total flags, including recorded penalty awards; they can differ from drive summaries. Conversion attempts use recorded converted and failed down flags, including flagged kneels. Nullified downs, punts and field goals are not inferred attempts.
Inside-20 drives have a recorded down starting closer than 20 yards from the opponent's goal line. Reaching only the 20 is excluded. Only touchdowns for the possessing team on those drives count. This definition is not an official league red-zone ranking.
Possession includes overtime. Time is minutes:seconds; per-game time is rounded to the nearest second. Possession share divides the team's recorded seconds by the full elapsed time of its counted games, including overtime. Rates use summed opportunities and zero opportunities have no percentage. Equal displayed values share a rank; rankings describe only the matching supplied teams. — = not supplied.
Regular-season record and points; postseason shows how each run ended. Expected W is the win total implied by points scored and allowed (Pythagorean expectation, exponent 2.37); the small figure is actual minus expected, where +1 or more suggests close-game luck. From WHYNFL's results archive, which begins in 1999, counted by franchise (Raiders include Oakland, Chargers San Diego, Rams St. Louis). Splits cover the regular season and playoffs: night games kick off at 7 pm Eastern or later (games without a listed kickoff are left out), and one-score games are decided by 8 points or fewer.
