The Detroit Lions play in the NFC North. This hub brings together the club’s official roster, player profiles, and related coverage.
The roster at a glance
The source lists 77 active, practice-squad, and reserve-list entries after released and transferred entries are excluded; 53 carry its ACT designation. An active-roster label is not a guarantee that a player will dress for a particular game.
Linked player names below open individual profiles. The roster was checked on September 20, 2026. It is a dated roster snapshot, not a game-day inactive report.
Before Detroit: the Portsmouth Spartans
The franchise entered the NFL in 1930 as the Portsmouth Spartans, based in Ohio. After four seasons, it moved to Detroit in 1934 and adopted the Lions name. The new identity echoed the big-cat theme of the city’s baseball team, the Tigers. Portsmouth’s NFL seasons belong to the same franchise, rather than a separate predecessor that disappeared from the record.
Why old Lions games mention Detroit and Pontiac
The club’s early Detroit homes included University of Detroit Stadium and Briggs Stadium, later called Tiger Stadium. The stadium story then moved outside the city and back again:
1975–2001 seasons: the Lions played at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan.
From 2002: Ford Field brought the team’s home games back to downtown Detroit.
Tiger Stadium and Briggs Stadium are names for the same earlier venue. The Silverdome and Ford Field are separate buildings. Moving to Pontiac did not change the team’s Detroit Lions name, so the city in the team name and the location of a particular home game are not always identical.
The Thanksgiving tradition has a documented gap
The Lions first played on Thanksgiving in 1934, their first season in Detroit. Chicago won that opening holiday game 19–16. Detroit’s Thanksgiving series paused from 1939 through 1944 and resumed in 1945. It is a long-running tradition, but it should not be described as an uninterrupted annual sequence beginning in 1934.
Four NFL titles before the Super Bowl era
Detroit won the NFL championship in 1935, 1952, 1953 and 1957. The first came in the club’s second Detroit season; the other three established its championship period in the 1950s. These were league titles won before the Super Bowl existed, not Super Bowl victories.
The season-by-season results below begin in 1999. That window includes the end of the Silverdome years and the Ford Field era, but excludes Portsmouth, the early Detroit seasons and all four of those NFL championship teams. Use the archive’s stated starting year when interpreting its totals.

LIVE DATAUpdated Oct 8, 2026, 11:20 pm EDT
Play and drive totals cover 50 completed games across 32 teams. Games counted can differ by team. Rates use summed outcomes and opportunities; no minimum attempts apply. A missing value in any counted game withholds that metric. These are dated covered-game figures, not a complete season.

First downs count the play record's total flags, including recorded penalty awards; they can differ from drive summaries. Conversion attempts use recorded converted and failed down flags, including flagged kneels. Nullified downs, punts and field goals are not inferred attempts.
Inside-20 drives have a recorded down starting closer than 20 yards from the opponent's goal line. Reaching only the 20 is excluded. Only touchdowns for the possessing team on those drives count. This definition is not an official league red-zone ranking.
Possession includes overtime. Time is minutes:seconds; per-game time is rounded to the nearest second. Possession share divides the team's recorded seconds by the full elapsed time of its counted games, including overtime. Rates use summed opportunities and zero opportunities have no percentage. Equal displayed values share a rank; rankings describe only the matching supplied teams. — = not supplied.
Regular-season record and points; postseason shows how each run ended. Expected W is the win total implied by points scored and allowed (Pythagorean expectation, exponent 2.37); the small figure is actual minus expected, where +1 or more suggests close-game luck. From WHYNFL's results archive, which begins in 1999, counted by franchise (Raiders include Oakland, Chargers San Diego, Rams St. Louis). Splits cover the regular season and playoffs: night games kick off at 7 pm Eastern or later (games without a listed kickoff are left out), and one-score games are decided by 8 points or fewer.

The Detroit Lions point to Tim Twentyman's Week 2 Buffalo breakdown, Coach Campbell on the game, and a Cure Auto Insurance postgame show, plus two empty captions.
The Lions previewed their Week 4 game at Carolina with Dan Campbell, a podcast and player media sessions, followed up with postgame comments from Campbell and Jared Goff, and posted Goff mic'd up in the Week 3 win over the Jets and a Crucial Catch feature.
Ravens linebacker Trenton Simpson, Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and Broncos guard Ben Powers drew the largest fines, and five players were docked for hip-drop tackles.
Dan Campbell said the Pro Bowl safety and the free-agent center should open their return windows before Sunday’s game in Arizona, though neither is guaranteed to play.
Carolina’s second-year receiver came within one catch and nine yards of two franchise records, and the defense stopped Detroit on fourth-and-13 to seal the win.
