Lions survive Saints’ comeback on final two-point attempt

The Detroit Lions needed one last stop after a three-touchdown lead disappeared. They beat the New Orleans Saints 31–30 in overtime at Ford Field on September 13, 2026, when Tyler Shough’s two-point pass intended for Bryce Lance fell incomplete.

Detroit had built its advantage with a productive running game and short fields. Jahmyr Gibbs scored from a yard out in the first quarter, then did so again after Derrick Barnes intercepted Shough on the opening play of the second half. Roger McCreary’s strip-sack, recovered by DJ Wonnum, soon set up Jared Goff’s 19-yard touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown. The Lions led 21–0 with 8:54 left in the third quarter.

Shough and Olave bring New Orleans back

The Saints’ response changed the game. Kendre Miller’s eight-yard touchdown run and Shough’s one-yard scoring pass to Devaughn Vele cut the gap to seven before the fourth quarter. With Detroit later ahead 24–17, Shough found Chris Olave for 42 yards during the tying drive and hit Juwan Johnson for a nine-yard touchdown with 1:07 remaining. New Orleans even regained possession, but Daniel Carlson missed a 62-yard attempt as regulation expired.

Goff answered in overtime, taking Detroit 70 yards in 10 plays and finishing with a four-yard touchdown to St. Brown. Shough then kept the Saints alive with a 20-yard completion to Olave on fourth-and-three from their own 27. His eight-yard touchdown to Noah Fant left New Orleans a point behind with 1:34 remaining. Kellen Moore chose the conversion attempt for the lead, and the incompletion ended the comeback.

Production and mistakes pull in opposite directions

Gibbs finished with 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns, giving Detroit a dependable source of offense while Goff threw for 206 yards without an interception. Shough’s 410 passing yards and Olave’s 182 receiving yards explain how threatening New Orleans became. The Saints outgained Detroit 469–369, but their three turnovers helped create the deficit they spent the afternoon erasing. Detroit left the opener 1–0; New Orleans left 0–1 with a comeback that reached the final play but never produced a lead.
