Georgia Tech and Alabama: a back with several roles

Jahmyr Gibbs built his receiving background before entering the NFL. He played at Georgia Tech in 2020 and 2021, and his second season showed the range of his contribution: 746 rushing yards, 470 receiving yards and 589 kickoff-return yards.

After transferring to Alabama for 2022, Gibbs led the Crimson Tide with 926 rushing yards and 44 receptions. Those catches produced another 444 yards, while his 6.1 yards per carry showed that the receiving work accompanied an efficient rushing season. His college record helps explain why both parts of his offensive workload matter when following his development.

From the 12th pick to a productive rookie partnership

The Detroit Lions selected Gibbs 12th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. He shared the backfield with David Montgomery and finished his rookie regular season with 945 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Gibbs also caught 52 passes for 316 yards and a touchdown, bringing his production to 1,261 yards from scrimmage.

The partnership had a place in Detroit’s history: Gibbs and Montgomery became the franchise’s first pair of running backs to each rush for at least 10 touchdowns in one season. Gibbs led NFL rookies in rushing touchdowns in 2023. At the end of that season, head coach Dan Campbell also pointed to progress in his pass protection and receiving out of the backfield, areas of development that a rushing total alone cannot describe.

The four-touchdown finish to his 2024 season

Gibbs raised his regular-season rushing total to 1,412 yards in 2024 and led the NFL with 20 touchdowns across rushing and receiving. That scoring total set a Lions single-season record. He reached it in the January 5, 2025 finale against the Minnesota Vikings, running for 139 yards and three touchdowns and adding five catches for 31 yards and another score.

Detroit won 31–9, clinching the NFC North and the NFC’s No. 1 playoff seed. The four-touchdown night therefore did more than complete an individual record: it helped secure a first-round bye and home-field advantage for Detroit’s NFC playoff run.

A larger receiving contribution in 2025

Gibbs caught 77 passes for 616 yards and five touchdowns in the 2025 regular season. All three receiving figures were career highs when that season ended. He also ran for 1,223 yards and 13 touchdowns and earned his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection.

Compared with 2024, his rushing yardage fell while his receptions increased from 52 to 77. The two season lines show different kinds of progress: 2024 established a new scoring benchmark for Detroit, while 2025 expanded the receiving production that had been part of his game since college.
