How Buffalo kept Detroit chasing

The Buffalo Bills opened their new Highmark Stadium with a 41–31 win over the Detroit Lions on September 17, 2026. Josh Allen supplied three passing touchdowns and two rushing scores, but the shape of the game mattered as much as that individual total: Buffalo built a three-touchdown lead, then answered Detroit’s second-half pressure with drives that consumed both yards and time.

The opening advantage survived a penalty reprieve

Allen finished the first possession with a one-yard touchdown run, then found Joshua Palmer for a 43-yard score. Detroit appeared to have stopped the next threat when a deflected pass was intercepted near its goal line. A defensive-holding penalty erased the takeaway, however, and Allen’s one-yard pass to Dawson Knox made it 21–0 early in the second quarter. That missed chance to end a possession left the Lions trying to repair a substantial deficit.

Detroit did begin to move the ball. Jared Goff connected with Jahmyr Gibbs for its first touchdown, and a field goal at the half brought the score to 27–10. But Buffalo had already scored touchdowns on its first four possessions. Greg Rousseau’s two early sacks helped delay Detroit’s response while the home offense established control.

Long answers mattered more than a passing-yard comparison

Amon-Ra St. Brown’s two-yard touchdown cut the margin to ten in the third quarter. Buffalo answered with a 15-play, 75-yard drive lasting 8:22, capped by Allen’s second rushing touchdown. After Sam LaPorta again pulled Detroit within ten, James Cook III eventually finished an eight-play, 61-yard touchdown march with 2:50 remaining. Detroit’s final touchdown came too late to change the result.

The Bills ran for 203 yards, including Cook’s 135 and Allen’s 69, and converted nine of twelve third downs. Those numbers explain why Goff’s 327 passing yards and four touchdowns could not rescue Detroit. St. Brown produced nine catches, 142 yards and two scores, yet the Lions repeatedly needed another possession while Buffalo could extend its own.

The result left Buffalo 2–0 and Detroit 1–1 after Week 2. For that early-season snapshot, Buffalo’s most persuasive evidence was its ability to sustain offense after the fast start; Detroit’s passing production could not compensate for the initial deficit and the defensive stops that never arrived.
