Week 3 recap: Gibbs restores the lead, Clark closes the door

The Detroit Lions beat the New York Jets 31–24 at Ford Field on September 27, 2026, after watching a 14-point fourth-quarter lead disappear. Jahmyr Gibbs supplied the winning touchdown, but Detroit still needed Chuck Clark’s strip-sack and Jack Campbell’s recovery to stop the Jets’ final drive.

The Jets turn a deficit into a tie

Gibbs’ second rushing touchdown put Detroit ahead 24–10 just after the fourth quarter began. Geno Smith answered with a four-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Ruckert. The two-point attempt failed, but Kingsley Enagbare stopped Gibbs on fourth down on the following possession, giving New York another opening.

The Jets used it. Facing fourth-and-six, Smith found Garrett Wilson for a 23-yard touchdown. Sterling Shepard caught the two-point conversion to level the score at 24–24 with 4:06 left. New York had forced Detroit to produce another scoring drive rather than protect its earlier cushion.

Detroit answers on both sides

Jared Goff took the Lions 65 yards in four plays, finishing with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Gibbs with 2:25 remaining. Gibbs ended the day with 99 rushing yards, 65 receiving yards and three touchdowns, giving Detroit a scorer who could finish possessions on the ground or through the air.

Smith brought the Jets back into Detroit territory, but a safety blitz ended the challenge. Clark reached him and forced a fumble with 51 seconds left; Campbell recovered, and the Lions ran out the clock. Smith’s 321 passing yards and three touchdowns had made the comeback possible, with Wilson and Kenyon Sadiq each topping 100 receiving yards. The late turnover prevented those performances from producing a tying score.

What the result meant after Week 3

The Lions moved to 2–1, while the Jets fell to 1–2. Detroit’s offense answered the tie quickly, and its defense delivered the final possession-changing play after struggling to slow New York’s second-half passing game.
