The New England Patriots play in the AFC East. This hub brings together the club’s official roster, player profiles, and related coverage.
The roster at a glance
The source lists 79 active, practice-squad, and reserve-list entries after released and transferred entries are excluded; 54 carry its ACT designation. An active-roster label is not a guarantee that a player will dress for a particular game.
Linked player names below open individual profiles. The roster was checked on September 20, 2026. It is a dated roster snapshot, not a game-day inactive report.
From Boston to New England
The Patriots began play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League. They used the Boston Patriots name through the 1970 season, then became the New England Patriots on March 22, 1971. The name change and move to Foxborough belong to the same franchise’s history, rather than the creation of a second team.
Several Boston homes, then a permanent base in Foxborough
The club’s early venues included Fenway Park, Boston College’s Alumni Stadium and Harvard Stadium. In the final three seasons before the move, it played at Fenway in 1968, Alumni Stadium in 1969 and Harvard in 1970. The Patriots made their debut at the new Schaefer Stadium in Foxborough in August 1971.
Schaefer Stadium, Sullivan Stadium and Foxboro Stadium were successive names for that building. Gillette Stadium is a different venue: it opened in 2002 beside the old stadium’s site. Its early name, CMGI Field, was replaced by Gillette Stadium in August 2002.
The first Super Bowl title came before Gillette opened
The 2001 championship season was the Patriots’ last at Foxboro Stadium. Its final game was the snowy 16–13 overtime playoff win against Oakland on January 19, 2002. New England then won Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans on February 3, beating the St. Louis Rams 20–17.
That sequence matters when reading old footage or season records: a game played in early 2002 can belong to the 2001 season, and the first championship team still used the old home stadium. The Super Bowl itself was played at a separate host venue.
Reading the championship years and results archive
New England’s six Super Bowl-winning seasons are 2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016 and 2018. These are season labels, rather than the calendar years in which the championship games were played.
The season-by-season archive below starts in 1999. It includes all six of those championship seasons, but not the Boston era or the earlier AFC title teams of 1985 and 1996. Its record totals should be read within that displayed window.

Plays & drives across covered games
UPDATEDUpdated Oct 4, 2026, 10:47 am EDT
Play and drive totals cover 49 completed games across 32 teams. Games counted can differ by team. Rates use summed outcomes and opportunities; no minimum attempts apply. A missing value in any counted game withholds that metric. These are dated covered-game figures, not a complete season.

First downs count the play record's total flags, including recorded penalty awards; they can differ from drive summaries. Conversion attempts use recorded converted and failed down flags, including flagged kneels. Nullified downs, punts and field goals are not inferred attempts.
Inside-20 drives have a recorded down starting closer than 20 yards from the opponent's goal line. Reaching only the 20 is excluded. Only touchdowns for the possessing team on those drives count. This definition is not an official league red-zone ranking.
Possession includes overtime. Time is minutes:seconds; per-game time is rounded to the nearest second. Possession share divides the team's recorded seconds by the full elapsed time of its counted games, including overtime. Rates use summed opportunities and zero opportunities have no percentage. Equal displayed values share a rank; rankings describe only the matching supplied teams. — = not supplied.
Regular-season record and points; postseason shows how each run ended. Expected W is the win total implied by points scored and allowed (Pythagorean expectation, exponent 2.37); the small figure is actual minus expected, where +1 or more suggests close-game luck. From WHYNFL's results archive, which begins in 1999, counted by franchise (Raiders include Oakland, Chargers San Diego, Rams St. Louis). Splits cover the regular season and playoffs: night games kick off at 7 pm Eastern or later (games without a listed kickoff are left out), and one-score games are decided by 8 points or fewer.
