Preview: Patriots at Bills, October 4

Updated October 3, 2026, Eastern time, with New England’s Saturday availability update. The New England Patriots visit the Buffalo Bills at the new Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park on Sunday, October 4, with kickoff at 1 p.m. EDT. CBS carries the game in assigned markets, including WBZ in New England. Buffalo arrives 3–0 and New England 1–2. This section previews the game; no result has been recorded.

New England must replace two defensive starters

Cornerback Christian Gonzalez and defensive tackle Christian Barmore are out with shoulder injuries after missing all three practices. Their absences affect different parts of the defense: Gonzalez’s coverage role and Barmore’s work up front cannot be treated as one interchangeable vacancy.

Charles Woods is a possible replacement at cornerback, but the exact starting package has not been confirmed. He already played 60 defensive snaps while filling in for Carlton Davis III in Week 2. The personnel question against Buffalo is how New England balances its available corners with the Bills’ multi-tight-end formations. Watch the combinations used in base defense and on passing downs rather than assuming one substitute takes every missing snap.

Is Drake Maye available?

Drake Maye was a full participant throughout the week despite appearing on the practice report with a right-shoulder issue. He has no game-status designation for Sunday. That is a different situation from tackle Morgan Moses, who is questionable with a foot injury after returning to limited practice Friday.

The Patriots downgraded cornerback Channing Canada to out with a hamstring injury Saturday, October 3, superseding his Friday questionable designation. New England’s other questionable players are Christian Elliss, Reggie Gilliam, Dre’Mont Jones, Eli Raridon and Craig Woodson. Brenden Schooler is out: his return to practice from the non-football injury list does not make him eligible for this game.

Buffalo’s key decisions come at cornerback and running back

Christian Benford is questionable with a toe injury. He did not practice during the week, and coach Joe Brady said the decision would go to game day. Ray Davis is also questionable with a hamstring injury; defensive lineman T.J. Sanders is doubtful.

DJ Moore has no game-status designation after limited Friday practice. Keon Coleman was also limited, and Joe Brady said he expected him to play. When checked early October 3, Buffalo’s live injury table lists Coleman as questionable, while New England’s October 2 report gives him no game designation and the league table leaves that field blank. Check the final inactive list before treating Coleman as available. Benford’s questionable designation is likewise not confirmation that he will play.

What makes this meeting different?

This is New England’s first visit to Buffalo’s new Highmark Stadium and the first of two scheduled 2026 meetings; the return game is December 6 at Gillette Stadium. The clubs split their season series in each of the previous three years. In 2025, New England won 23–20 in Buffalo before the Bills won the rematch 35–31.

Preview analysis: The most useful pregame checks are the defensive personnel and Maye’s protection. New England already knows Gonzalez and Barmore will be absent, while Moses remains unresolved. Buffalo still needs a final decision on Benford. Those circumstances make coverage combinations and pass protection worth watching, but they do not justify naming unannounced starters or predicting a score.

Before kickoff

Check the Patriots injury report and Bills injury report for subsequent changes. Friday designations and Sunday’s inactive list serve different purposes. The final inactive announcement will settle which questionable players dress; doubtful means unlikely to play, not a confirmed absence.
