How is third-down conversion rate calculated?

Conversion rate = successful third downs ÷ third-down attempts × 100. Add the successes and attempts across the included games first, then calculate the percentage. Averaging individual game percentages would give small and large attempt totals the same weight.

San Francisco 49ers converted 23 of 40 recorded third downs across 4 games: 23 ÷ 40 × 100 = 57.5%.

What counts as a third-down attempt?

This table counts recorded converted or failed third-down outcomes. A matching outcome must belong to a counted pass, run, quarterback kneel or spike on third down. Punts, field goals and nullified downs are not added as attempts. A touchdown recorded as a successful third down counts as a conversion.

Why can the rankings change?

More completed games, corrections to a recorded play or a change in available game coverage can change both the numerator and denominator. An unknown value in any included game withholds that team's percentage rather than treating the missing result as zero. Percentages are rounded to one decimal place; equal displayed percentages share the same rank.

Does this show third-down defense?

No. These are offensive conversions by the team with the ball. They are not opponent conversion rates or rankings of third-down defense. Conversion rate also does not adjust for yards needed, opponent strength or game situation.
