The New England Patriots lost a second starting guard to injured reserve on Thursday, October 22. Hours before kickoff against the Chicago Bears, they placed left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker on the list with a hamstring injury and called up two players from the practice squad. The Kansas City Chiefs put left tackle Josh Simmons on injured reserve with a back injury, the Seattle Seahawks activated running back Zach Charbonnet and ended Elijah Arroyo’s season, and the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers each lost a defender to the list.

The Philadelphia Eagles rebuilt their practice squad with three signings, including former first-round pick Evan Neal, and the Detroit Lions promoted receiver DeAndre Carter. No trades were reported on Thursday. The trade deadline is Tuesday, November 10, at 4 p.m. ET.

The moves that matter

Vera-Tucker joins Onwenu on the Patriots’ list. New England placed Vera-Tucker on injured reserve after he hurt his hamstring in the second quarter of Sunday’s win over the New York Jets, so he will miss at least four games. Guard Mike Onwenu is already on the list with a broken ankle, which leaves the Patriots without both of their starting guards. Ben Brown, who replaced Vera-Tucker on Sunday, was also ruled out for Thursday with a knee injury. To fill out the game-day roster, New England elevated lineman Xavier Newman-Johnson, who has 25 games and four starts at both guard spots and center, and linebacker Benton Whitley. Our final Bears-Patriots injury report has the full list of who is out.

New England Patriots on X

Bears call up two special teamers. Chicago elevated linebacker Buddy Johnson and running back Zavier Scott for the game. Scott forced a fumble on kickoff coverage in last week’s win over the Atlanta Falcons and has four special teams tackles over the last four games, the most on the team. Johnson, a 2021 fourth-round pick of the Steelers, made his first appearance of the season against Atlanta. Both players go back to the practice squad after the game.

Chicago Bears on X

Simmons goes on injured reserve. Kansas City put Simmons, its 2025 first-round pick, on injured reserve with a herniated disc in his lower back, and he will miss at least the next four games. Head trainer Rick Burkholder said Simmons first reported calf discomfort on August 17, that tests found the back injury, and that specialists advised against surgery. His rehab then stalled, and the team decided to give him more time. Undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson has started at left tackle for the unbeaten Chiefs and has not allowed a sack. Our Thursday practice report has more.

Kansas City Chiefs on X

Charbonnet is back, Arroyo is done. Seattle activated Charbonnet from the physically unable to perform list on the last day of his 21-day practice window, putting him on the 53-man roster for the first time this season after reconstructive knee surgery in February. To make room, the Seahawks placed second-year tight end Elijah Arroyo on injured reserve. Arroyo is having season-ending shoulder surgery after getting hurt against the Denver Broncos, Adam Schefter reported, which leaves AJ Barner as the clear starter at tight end. Seattle hosts Kansas City on Sunday night. See our Wednesday injury report for Charbonnet’s first full practice.

Seattle Seahawks on X

Steelers and Buccaneers lose a defender each. Pittsburgh placed defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day on injured reserve with a triceps injury. Because of the Steelers’ Week 9 bye, he will be out through Week 11. Joseph-Day signed a two-year, $11 million deal in free agency and had played in all six games, and rookies Gabriel Rubio and Kevin Jobity Jr. are next in line. Tampa Bay placed linebacker Christian Rozeboom on injured reserve with a finger injury from Sunday’s loss and activated receiver David Sills V from injured reserve. Sills had 18 catches for 191 yards and two touchdowns with Atlanta last season and could make his Buccaneers debut on Sunday at Carolina, with Jalen McMillan on injured reserve and Emeka Egbuka in the concussion protocol.

Practice squad moves

Eagles add Neal and bring back Blue. Philadelphia signed guard Evan Neal, the No. 7 overall pick of the New York Giants in 2022, to its practice squad two days after the Las Vegas Raiders released him from theirs. The Eagles also re-signed running back Jaydon Blue, whom they waived on Tuesday and who cleared waivers on Wednesday, added linebacker Anfernee Orji and waived tight end E.J. Jenkins. Saquon Barkley returned to practice on Thursday and is expected to play Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys.

Philadelphia Eagles on X

Lions promote Carter. Detroit signed veteran receiver and returner DeAndre Carter to the active roster from the practice squad ahead of Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers and added safety Myles Bryant to the practice squad.

Detroit Lions on X

Waiver players find new homes. Several players who cleared waivers on Wednesday landed on practice squads. Arizona re-signed tight end Shawn Bowman to its practice squad a day after waiving him and released lineman Austin Deculus. Baltimore signed linebacker Carl Jones Jr. to its practice squad and released center Andre James, and the Jacksonville Jaguars announced the practice squad signing of linebacker Jamal Hill, which was first reported on Wednesday.

Arizona Cardinals on X

Falcons open another window. Atlanta designated offensive tackle Cameron Williams, a 2025 sixth-round pick of the Eagles whom the Falcons claimed at roster cutdowns, to return from injured reserve. He joins A.J. Terrell Jr. and Beaux Collins as Falcons players now eligible to practice. Atlanta also released cornerback Malcolm DeWalt IV, an undrafted rookie who made the team out of training camp.

What comes next

The Patriots and Bears play Thursday night in Chicago, and the elevated players revert to their practice squads after the game. Buffalo safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s one-game suspension was upheld on appeal on Thursday, so he will miss the Bills’ game against the Baltimore Ravens. Washington, on its bye, has still not moved receiver Terry McLaurin to injured reserve, and the Broncos’ expected injured reserve move for Jonah Elliss has not been made. More practice windows and activations are likely on Friday and Saturday ahead of Week 7’s Sunday games.

The why matters.
