The moves that matter

Ravens turn to Brissett. Baltimore is acquiring Brissett from Arizona after losing Lamar Jackson to a thumb injury and Tyler Huntley to a season-ending turf toe injury. Schefter reported that the trade will not be finalized in time for Brissett to play Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and that he is expected to make his Ravens debut in Week 10 on Monday Night Football against the Los Angeles Chargers. Rapoport wrote that Brissett is headed to Baltimore to become the starter “soon enough.” Their posts did not say what Baltimore is giving up.

Brissett, 33, will be heading to his seventh team, Mike Garafolo noted. He rejoins quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork, who held the same job in Arizona. The Cardinals benched him for Gardner Minshew in Sunday’s 33-30 overtime win over the Dallas Cowboys, as we covered in our postgame story. Asked about the trade on Wednesday, Mike LaFleur said, “I really don’t have much of a comment on it, but we’re gonna let the process play out.”

Until the deal is official, rookie Joe Fagnano starts Thursday, backed by Kedon Slovis and Austin Reed, and Jake Moody, who is on the practice squad, is set to kick after Tyler Loop went on injured reserve. Jackson’s move to injured reserve, which the team said was coming, had not appeared in the league’s log by Wednesday evening. Our Wednesday injury report has the Huntley details.

Cardinals fill out the roster. Arizona opened the 21-day practice window for offensive lineman Isaiah Adams, which designates him to return from injured reserve, and signed running back Jermar Jefferson and receiver James Proche II to the practice squad.

Bears lose Street. Chicago placed Street, who has a knee injury and was carted off in Monday’s win at Seattle, on injured reserve. The Bears promoted tight end Stephen Carlson from the practice squad to the active roster and signed defensive end Earnest Brown IV to the practice squad.

Lions add depth at linebacker. Detroit signed K.J. Britt from the Patriots’ practice squad to the active roster, promoted Joe Bachie from its own practice squad and signed Owen Pappoe to the practice squad. The moves follow the loss of rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder to injured reserve on Tuesday.

Buccaneers claim Keegan. Garafolo reported that Tampa Bay claimed Keegan off waivers from Minnesota, which waived him on Monday. Greg Auman reported that the Buccaneers waived guard Luke Haggard to make room on the 53-man roster.

Other Wednesday moves

Vikings and Commanders. Minnesota signed running back DeeJay Dallas to the 53-man roster, an expected move because the Vikings had run out of practice squad call-ups, and added tackle Corey Robinson II to the practice squad. Washington promoted defensive tackle Ricky Barber and signed defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale to the practice squad, a day after placing Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw on injured reserve.

Waiver wire returns. Two players who cleared waivers on Tuesday landed back with their old clubs: Houston signed defensive tackle Jaden Crumedy to the practice squad, along with receiver Daniel Sobkowicz, and released defensive tackle Kyonte Hamilton and tight end Zaire Mitchell-Paden from the practice squad. New England signed safety Elliott Davison to the practice squad. Cleveland signed tight end Carsen Ryan to the active roster and running back Hassan Haskins to the practice squad. The Carolina Panthers signed offensive tackle Da’Metrius Weatherspoon and the Philadelphia Eagles signed cornerback Christian Braswell to their practice squads.

Also in the news

Saints name Smyth their kicker. Head coach Kellen Moore said Wednesday that Charlie Smyth will kick for New Orleans this week, after the team released Daniel Carlson on Tuesday. The Saints host the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, November 8. The league’s log had not shown a kicker signing by Wednesday evening.

Aiyuk and Shanahan. Brandon Aiyuk filed for reinstatement and plans to report to the 49ers on Friday, as we reported in our Aiyuk story. Garafolo reported that Kyle Shanahan was asked what he expects from Aiyuk and answered, “None. I have no expectation. I’ve kind of moved on with that mentally.”

What comes next

The Brissett trade should become official over the weekend, and Lamar Jackson’s injured reserve placement is still open. Rams cornerback Jaylen Watson needs shoulder surgery that will end his season, Sean McVay said, so an injured reserve move is likely. Clubs often file a second wave of practice squad moves later in the week, and the trade deadline is Tuesday, November 10, at 4 p.m. ET. Check back for Thursday’s roundup.
