Wednesday’s first wave of Week 9 injury news brought one season-ending loss for the Ravens, one more open question for the Jaguars, and several returns. Backup quarterback Tyler Huntley needs surgery on his turf toe, Bhayshul Tuten is a game-time decision for Thursday night, A.J. Brown was not practicing for the Patriots while Mack Hollins began his return, and the Saints opened the practice window for first-round receiver Jordyn Tyson.

  • Huntley’s turf toe is season-ending and he is set for surgery, which leaves undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano as the Ravens’ starter on Thursday
  • Jaguars coach Liam Coen called Tuten (ankle, foot) a game-time decision and said he expects him to do something in practice after two days off
  • Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said Brown, Christian Barmore and TreVeyon Henderson would not practice, and Hollins and guard Greg Van Roten were designated to return from injured reserve
  • Tyson, the No. 8 pick in April’s draft, is back at practice after missing all seven Saints games with a hamstring injury
  • Falcons estimated report: Bowman full, Brian Robinson Jr. and Divine Deablo limited, and James Pearce Jr. full
  • Bears left tackle Braxton Jones had right knee surgery and will not return from injured reserve

Ravens: Huntley is done for the season

Tests on Huntley’s right toe showed a season-ending turf toe injury, and he is set for surgery to repair it. Ian Rapoport compared it to the turf toe surgery Joe Burrow had last year and added that Huntley “faces a long road ahead.” Lamar Jackson (right thumb) is out indefinitely, so the Ravens (4-4) will play the Jaguars on Thursday night with Fagnano starting, backed by Kedon Slovis and Austin Reed. Fagnano was a full participant on Tuesday, as we laid out in our Tuesday injury report story.

Jaguars: Tuten waits on Thursday

Tuten missed Monday’s and Tuesday’s practices, and Coen said Wednesday that the running back told him personally that he feels better. The coach expects him to do something in practice, but the status is a game-time decision. Reporters covering the open portion of Wednesday’s practice did not see Tuten on the field, so the official report will matter. Coen also said he expects right guard Ezra Cleveland (knee, ankle) to play. If Tuten cannot go, Chris Rodriguez Jr. would take a bigger role.

Patriots: Brown sits, Hollins and Van Roten return

Brown, who has dealt with an ankle injury and now a knee issue, was not practicing Wednesday, along with Barmore and Henderson, who are dealing with illnesses. Asked whether Brown could go back on injured reserve, Vrabel said, “I can just speak on today and where he’s at today and what we feel like he can do today.” The Patriots host the Packers on Sunday. New England did get some help: Hollins (calf) has been out for about four weeks, and the club started the 21-day clock for him and Van Roten (thigh), so either could be activated before Sunday.

Saints: Tyson starts the clock

New Orleans (2-5) hosts the Browns on Sunday, and it now has 21 days to decide whether to activate Tyson, who has been on injured reserve since a hamstring injury in training camp. Mike Garafolo noted that the Saints will “surely be mindful of his hamstring as they ramp him up.” Opening the window does not mean he will play this week.

Falcons: first report from Madrid

Atlanta practiced in Madrid on Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s game against the Bengals, and the estimated report was encouraging. Bowman (hamstring) was full, while Robinson (hamstring) and Deablo (forearm) were limited, and all three missed last week’s loss in Tampa. Pearce, back from his eight-game suspension, was listed as full. Samson Ebukam and Zachariah Branch (hamstrings) did not make the trip, as noted in our Madrid game week story. The Bengals did not practice Wednesday, so their report is an estimate.

Bears and Lions: a lost season and a hopeful message

Jones has been on injured reserve since Week 3 with a right knee injury, and Brad Biggs reported that he underwent surgery on Tuesday and will not return this season, adding the quote “I was really encouraged with his play. It was a big loss.” In Detroit, linebacker Jack Campbell released a statement saying, “I have full movement in my lower body, and I’m continuing to make progress with movement in my upper body.” He added that he remains “very optimistic” and thanked the medical staff at Henry Ford Hospital. Dan Campbell’s Monday update is in our earlier Lions story.

What comes next

The Ravens and Jaguars file their final report on Wednesday with game designations, and Thursday’s kickoff is 8:15 p.m. ET, which is 3:15 a.m. Friday in Cairo. Most other Week 9 teams will release their first full report later Wednesday, so Brown’s and Henderson’s status and the Browns’ and Jets’ concussion cases are the main items to watch. Garrett Wilson, Deshaun Watson and Micah Parsons are covered in our Wednesday morning story.
