Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell visited linebacker Jack Campbell in the hospital on Sunday night and called what he saw “positive,” but rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder is out for the season. The team said on Monday afternoon that Jack Campbell “continues to rest and recover at a local hospital” and that “preliminary indications are positive,” and that it will not share more out of respect for him and his family.
- Dan Campbell said he spoke with Jack’s parents and wife and that “everybody is in good spirits”; he called it “a small setback” and said, “Your prayers are working”
- Rolder hurt his hamstring on the same play as Jack Campbell, and Dan Campbell said it is significant enough that he “will be out for the season” and may need surgery
- Wonnum and Branch both passed the first day of the concussion protocol, but Campbell said it is too early to know how long they will be out
- Mays, Reed and Saylors are not expected to practice on Wednesday, when the first full report of Week 9 comes out
The Lions’ injury list going into Miami
The Lions play at the Dolphins on Sunday. The coach said the team will talk about roster moves with general manager Brad Holmes, and Derrick Barnes and Malcolm Rodriguez are among the linebackers Detroit will lean on. He also thanked Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell for checking on Jack Campbell, saying, “This league is highly competitive, but it is a brotherhood.”
| Player | Injury | Status Monday | Outlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jack Campbell, LB | Neck | In a local hospital; “preliminary indications are positive” | No timetable shared |
| Jimmy Rolder, LB | Hamstring | Out | Done for the season; may need surgery |
| DJ Wonnum, EDGE | Concussion | In the protocol | Too early to say |
| Brian Branch, DB | Concussion | In the protocol | Too early to say |
| Cade Mays, C | Low ankle sprain | Not expected to practice Wednesday | Not announced |
| D.J. Reed, CB | Hip | Not expected to practice Wednesday | Not announced |
| Jacob Saylors, RB | Neck | Not expected to practice Wednesday | Not announced |
Jeremy Fowler reported that Mays has a low ankle sprain, which usually means one to six weeks; the Lions have not given a timetable. Reed was available to speak after Sunday’s game, which is usually a good sign. Saylors was described only as having “a little something.”
Bengals put Cashius Howell on injured reserve
Cincinnati placed rookie defensive end Cashius Howell on injured reserve on Tuesday after wrist surgery on Monday, so he will miss at least four games. Howell, a second-round pick from Texas A&M, played in all seven games and had a sack and two tackles for loss. The Bengals fly to Madrid to play the Falcons at 9:30 a.m. ET on Sunday, with Myles Murphy, Boye Mafe, Cedric Johnson and Shemar Stewart still at the position; Johnson and cornerback DJ Turner are also being watched this week.
Myles Garrett starts his practice clock for the Rams
Rams coach Sean McVay said Garrett will practice this week, which opens a 21-day window for the team to decide whether to activate him from injured reserve. He has been on injured reserve since Sept. 17, three days after knee surgery following the Week 1 loss to the 49ers in Australia. McVay would not set a game timeline: “Taking it a day at a time is going to be the best way that we can approach it.”
McVay also said cornerback Jaylen Watson “aggravated his shoulder again” against the Chargers, cornerback Trent McDuffie “came in feeling better than maybe what we expected,” linebacker Grant Stuard hurt his hamstring in warm-ups and is week to week, and running back Dean Connors broke his hand and had surgery. Tight end Colby Parkinson, who missed Sunday with a rib injury, is “making really good progress.”
Steelers receivers are on schedule
Pittsburgh reporter Gerry Dulac said on a Pittsburgh radio show that wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. is due back after the bye for the Bengals game, Roman Wilson about one week later, and Ben Skowronek by the Bengals game too. Pittman went on injured reserve after Week 4 and Wilson after Week 5, and Pittman has said he has started running.
