Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey staked the San Francisco 49ers to a 20-3 halftime lead, and the defense survived a Washington comeback bid with a fourth-down stop and a sack on the final snap as San Francisco beat the Washington Commanders 23-17 on Monday night, October 19, at Levi’s Stadium.

The 49ers are 6-0, the only team in the league with six wins, and are unbeaten at home. Washington falls to 1-4-1 and heads into its bye having lost receiver Terry McLaurin to a knee injury in the first quarter. With the Commanders’ loss, no NFC East team has won a game in either of the past two weeks: all four lost in Week 6, and the only result for the division in Week 5 was Washington’s 27-27 tie with the Giants.

A fast start for San Francisco

Purdy opened the night with a nine-play, 64-yard march, hitting Mike Evans for 24 yards and finishing it with an 11-yard touchdown throw to George Kittle. After Drew Stevens answered with a 51-yard field goal, Purdy went deep to Evans for 54 yards on the next snap, and McCaffrey plunged in from a yard out. Eddy Pineiro pushed the extra point wide right, leaving it 13-3.

Washington’s best early chance died at the San Francisco 13, where Jayden Daniels threw incomplete on fourth-and-2 early in the second quarter. The Commanders did take the ball away once: K’Lavon Chaisson knocked it loose from McCaffrey after a 12-yard catch, and Frankie Luvu recovered at the Washington 19.

The 49ers answered with their longest drive of the night, 14 plays and 69 yards over 6:13, and McCaffrey scored again from a yard out with 13 seconds left in the half. Evans got hurt on a 16-yard catch during that drive and did not return; the team later ruled him out with an Achilles injury.

Washington pushes back

Pineiro’s 33-yard field goal, set up by a 35-yard catch from Kittle, made it 23-3 midway through the third quarter. Daniels then led back-to-back touchdown drives: an 11-play, 65-yard series that ended with a 1-yard throw to Stefon Diggs, and a 10-play, 80-yard march capped by a 9-yard score to Rachaad White with 9:22 to go.

The Commanders got the ball back trailing 23-17 and reached the San Francisco 31, but Jeremy McNichols’ 31-yard touchdown run was wiped out by a face-mask penalty. An illegal-contact flag erased a fourth-down sack and gave Washington new life, yet on fourth-and-3 from the 17 Malik Mustapha broke up Daniels’ throw for Treylon Burks with 1:54 left.

Washington had one more shot from its own 46 with 52 seconds remaining and moved to the San Francisco 28. An intentional-grounding penalty with a 10-second runoff pushed the Commanders back, and Romello Height and Ogbo Okoronkwo shared a sack on the final play.

The numbers

  • Brock Purdy: 21 of 29 for 264 yards and a touchdown, no interceptions; 28 rushing yards on five carries.
  • Christian McCaffrey: 16 carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns, plus nine catches for 53 yards.
  • 49ers receivers: Evans had three catches for 94 yards before leaving; Kittle had five for 69 and a score.
  • Jayden Daniels: 29 of 40 for 300 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions; sacked four times.
  • Commanders receivers: Chig Okonkwo caught seven passes for 69 yards, Burks four for 66 and Diggs six for 44 with a touchdown.
  • Defense: Jaden Dugger led San Francisco with 11 tackles; Sonny Styles had 13 for Washington.

San Francisco outgained Washington 375-314 and ran for 126 yards to the Commanders’ 53, but it was flagged 11 times for 88 yards and went three-and-out on each of its last three possessions.

Injuries

McLaurin was hurt on a sack late in the first quarter and was carted off with his left leg in an air cast. Washington defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw was also hurt in the second quarter. San Francisco was already without Deebo Samuel, who missed the game with a hamstring injury.

What comes next

The 49ers visit the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, October 25, at 1 p.m. ET. The Commanders are off in Week 7 and host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, November 1.
