Chad Ryland missed an extra point that would have won the game with 6 seconds left in regulation, then made up for it with a 42-yard field goal in overtime as the Arizona Cardinals came back from 14 points down in the fourth quarter to beat the Dallas Cowboys 33-30 on Sunday, November 1, at AT&T Stadium.
Both teams are now 3-5. Arizona has beaten Dallas five straight times and is 5-0 all-time at AT&T Stadium. For the Cowboys, who did not trail until the final kick, it was a crushing follow-up to their Monday night win in Philadelphia.
Dallas controls the first half
The Dallas defense played its best game of the season for three quarters. Arizona was stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 1 on its second drive, when Caleb Downs and Kenny Clark met rookie Jeremiyah Love at the line. On the Cardinals’ next series, Shemar James intercepted Jacoby Brissett and returned it 33 yards to the Arizona 5, and Dallas scored two plays later when tight end James Mitchell recovered a fumble in the end zone.
Dak Prescott led a 12-play, 85-yard drive in the second quarter and threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Flournoy for a 14-0 lead. Ryland hit a 37-yard field goal before halftime. Brandon Aubrey added a 31-yarder in the third quarter after a 15-play, 8:23 drive, and Arizona’s offense was going nowhere: Brissett was sacked four times and went 10 of 23 for 119 yards before he was replaced by Gardner Minshew II.
Allgeier and Minshew bring Arizona back
Tyler Allgeier changed the game late in the third quarter. With Love out after aggravating his ankle injury, Allgeier went up the middle for a career-long 63-yard touchdown to make it 17-10. Prescott answered with a 5-yard touchdown scramble early in the fourth, but Allgeier broke a 50-yard run on the next drive and caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Minshew to cut it to 24-17.
Dallas used 6:53 on a 15-play drive that ended with a 35-yard Aubrey field goal, and after Trey McBride caught a 14-yard touchdown pass with 2:11 left, Aubrey hit again from 41 yards with 1:09 to go for a 30-24 lead. Arizona had no timeouts left.
Minshew needed only 63 seconds. He threw 14 yards to Allgeier, 21 yards to Michael Wilson and 27 more to Wilson to reach the 13, then found Wilson behind the defense in the back of the end zone with 6 seconds left to tie it at 30. Ryland, who had made his previous 58 extra points, pushed the kick wide left.
Overtime
Both teams went three-and-out to open overtime, with Quinnen Williams and Josh Sweat trading sacks. On Arizona’s second possession, McBride caught a pass to start the drive, Wilson made a 17-yard catch to get past midfield, and Allgeier ran 11 yards to set up Ryland. His 42-yard kick was never in doubt with 2:53 left.
“It’s 30-30, got a chance to play these boys in overtime. Let’s freaking go. Sign me up,” Minshew said. Arizona became the third team since 2000 to miss a go-ahead extra point in the final 10 seconds of regulation, and the first of the three to win anyway.
The numbers
- Gardner Minshew II: 17 of 23 for 188 yards and three touchdowns in relief. Brissett was 10 of 23 for 119 yards and an interception, and was sacked four times.
- Tyler Allgeier: 11 carries for 147 yards and a touchdown, plus five catches for 44 yards and a score. All but 7 of his 191 scrimmage yards came after halftime.
- Michael Wilson: eight catches for 111 yards and the tying touchdown, five of them for 77 yards in the fourth quarter.
- Trey McBride: seven catches for 72 yards and a touchdown. It was his 10th straight game with at least seven catches, the third-longest streak in league history.
- Dak Prescott: 19 of 29 for 195 yards and a touchdown, plus a rushing touchdown; sacked four times.
- Cowboys: CeeDee Lamb caught seven passes for 58 yards. Javonte Williams, who ran for 155 yards on Monday, was held to 56 on 24 carries. Aubrey made 3 of 4 field goals, missing from 61.
- Cowboys defense: Quinnen Williams had two sacks, and Donovan Ezeiruaku, James Houston and Von Miller had one each. James had the interception and nine tackles.
Arizona outgained Dallas 467-261 and ran for 202 yards at 7.5 a carry. Dallas managed 2.4 yards a carry, a week after running for 204 yards against Philadelphia.
What it means
“When you have people down, you have to finish them and that’s the most disappointing thing,” Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said. Prescott called it “one of the toughest I guess I’ve been a part of.” Dallas also lost rookie safety Caleb Downs to a concussion in the second half, and tight end Jake Ferguson left with an ankle injury.
Arizona won despite a long list of injuries. Love left with another ankle injury, running back Bam Knight was ruled out with a concussion after a hit by DeMarvion Overshown that forced a fumble, receiver Kendrick Bourne hurt his ankle and left tackle Jayden Williams hurt his knee. “I’ve never seen anything like it from an injury standpoint at the skill position,” Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur said. He did not want to discuss who his starting quarterback will be.
What comes next
Arizona visits the Seattle Seahawks next Sunday. Dallas plays at the Indianapolis Colts.
