Free agent receiver Tyreek Hill began contract negotiations with several teams on Monday, October 5, and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said he expects Hill to choose a club within days, with the Kansas City Chiefs among the teams in contact.
The timing matters because Kansas City suddenly needs receivers. The unbeaten Chiefs lost Tyquan Thornton and Rashee Rice to injuries in Sunday’s 30–27 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, and Hill, now 31, spent the first six seasons of his career catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.
“I would anticipate Tyreek potentially signing with a team over the next few days,” Rosenhaus told Adam Schefter. No agreement had been announced as of Tuesday morning, and no other interested team has been identified publicly.
What is reported, and what is not
Mike Garafolo reported that a deal between Hill and Kansas City feels inevitable at this stage. That is a reporter’s read of the talks rather than a done deal, and the Chiefs have not commented. Financial terms are unknown. Kansas City has roughly $3.1 million of room under the salary cap, so any contract would sit far below the roughly $30 million a year Hill earned in Miami.
Hill is not expected to play right away. He is working back from a severe left knee injury suffered in Miami’s fourth game of 2025 against the New York Jets, when he dislocated the knee and tore several ligaments, including his ACL. He needed more than one operation, appeared in only four games last season, and the Dolphins released him in February. Training videos he posted in July showed him running and jumping, though he admitted at the time that his left leg still lacked power. The target for his return to game action is November.
Why Kansas City is interested
The Chiefs are 4–0, but their receiver room took two hits in Las Vegas. Thornton, who caught five passes for 111 yards and both of Mahomes’ touchdown throws on Sunday, dislocated his left ankle and needs surgery, with a recovery estimated at 12 to 16 weeks. Rice hurt a hamstring in the same game; how long he will be out has not been disclosed. Through four weeks the pair had combined for 24 catches, 409 yards and three touchdowns, a large share of the passing game.
Among the receivers who finished Sunday’s game, Xavier Worthy did the most, with four catches for 70 yards, while tight end Travis Kelce added two receptions.
Hill’s history with the franchise is a big part of the appeal. From 2016 to 2021 he caught 479 passes for 6,630 yards and 56 touchdowns for Kansas City, made six consecutive Pro Bowls and won the Super Bowl after the 2019 season. He already knows Andy Reid’s offense and its terminology, which would shorten any learning curve once he is cleared.
