The Pittsburgh Steelers opened safety DeShon Elliott’s 21-day practice window this week, and he could be activated in time for Week 5. Head coach Mike McCarthy announced the move Thursday. Elliott has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury in Week 8 of last season and is under contract through 2027.

In a corresponding bit of injury news Saturday, Pittsburgh placed veteran receiver Michael Pittman Jr. on injured reserve with a foot injury expected to keep him out multiple weeks. The 29-year-old will miss at least four games before he is eligible to return, per Pro Football Rumors.

Elliott was moved to injured reserve with a designation to return during roster cuts, which guaranteed he would miss the first four weeks. Pittsburgh reworked its safety group this offseason, so getting the former sixth-round pick back soon would be a boost.
