Champions at 3-3

Eight months after winning Super Bowl LX, the Seattle Seahawks are .500, and on Sunday night their Super Bowl MVP comes back to Lumen Field with the unbeaten Chiefs. Here is the title defense so far, step by step.

Chapter 1

Fourteen wins and a parade

In Mike Macdonald’s second season, Seattle went 14-3, won the NFC West and took the conference’s No. 1 seed.

Seattle led 9-0 at halftime and did not allow a point until the fourth quarter. Uchenna Nwosu returned an interception for a touchdown to make it 29-7.

Chapter 2

The MVP leaves

Kenneth Walker III ran for 135 yards on 27 carries in the Super Bowl and caught two passes for 26 more. He was the first running back named Super Bowl MVP since Terrell Davis in January 1998.

A month later he was gone. Walker signed with Kansas City on March 12 on a three-year deal worth up to $45 million.

Seattle chose not to spend big at the position. Zach Charbonnet, Walker’s partner in the backfield, tore his ACL in the divisional win over San Francisco. First-round pick Jadarian Price fumbled twice in two games and is on injured reserve.

Emanuel Wilson has carried the load: 303 yards on 87 carries, 3.48 a carry.

Chapter 3

Three losses, eight points

The season started with a Super Bowl rematch and a win. Then the close games stopped breaking Seattle’s way.

  1. W 13-10 vs. Patriots
  2. W 31-7 at Cardinals
  3. L 33-31 at Commanders, with a pick-six
  4. W 30-23 vs. Chargers
  5. L 32-29 vs. 49ers, with a fumble lost in Seattle’s own end zone

Chapter 4

Darnold and Smith-Njigba

Sam Darnold has thrown for 1,033 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions and has been sacked 14 times. Drew Lock filled in for two games while Darnold was hurt in September.

“It’s not fair to our defense. It’s not fair to our special-teams group. It’s not fair, really, to our entire team.”
— Sam Darnold, on his turnovers

Macdonald has kept him as the starter.

“We won a world championship with him. We believe in the guy.”
— Mike Macdonald

The constant is Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Last season he set the franchise record with 1,793 receiving yards on 119 catches and was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year. This season he leads the NFL in receiving yards.

Chapter 5

Sunday night at Lumen Field

Kansas City arrives 5-0, and Walker leads the league in rushing. He has done it in five games, because the Chiefs had a Week 5 bye.

“We love Ken. We’re rooting for him. Obviously, we’ll be competing against him that night.”

Seattle may get reinforcements. Charbonnet has been practicing and could make his season debut, and right guard Anthony Bradford has returned to practice from injured reserve, which would give the Seahawks their five starting linemen together for the first time since the opener.

The Seahawks are three games behind the 6-0 49ers in the NFC West, with all three losses decided by three points or fewer. The defense has held up. The running game and the turnovers have not.

Chiefs at Seahawks kicks off Sunday, Oct. 25, at 8:20 p.m. ET, which is 3:20 a.m. Monday in Cairo.

The why matters.
