First downs & scoring opportunities

UPDATED Updated Oct 10, 2026, 11:17 am EDT
SEA at WAS · Week 3 · Completed-game play record
StatisticSEAWAS
First downs (play record)2717
Third-down conversions3 / 9 (33.3%)3 / 13 (23.1%)
Fourth-down conversions0 / 1 (0.0%)1 / 1 (100.0%)
Touchdowns / inside-20 drives4 / 5 (80.0%)2 / 3 (66.7%)

Conversions count recorded successful and failed attempts; punts, field goals and nullified downs do not become attempts just because they occur on fourth or third down. First downs count the play record's total, including recorded penalty awards; these can differ from drive-summary counts. An incomplete play record withholds the affected count. Zero opportunities have no percentage.

Inside-20 counts drives where a recorded down starts closer than 20 yards from the opponent's goal line. Reaching only the 20-yard line is excluded. The numerator counts those drives ending in a touchdown for the possessing team, excluding opponent return touchdowns. This is not a count of every touchdown or an official league red-zone ranking.

Drive clocks account for the full game. Play counts use the recorded drive totals; they can differ from the number of events in play-by-play. Return touchdowns are identified separately from the possessing team's drive result.

Game recap

Week 3 recap: Washington’s takeaways survive Seattle’s comeback

The Washington Commanders beat the Seattle Seahawks 33–31 at Northwest Stadium on September 27, 2026, winning a game in which Seattle gained 179 more yards. Three takeaways changed where Washington had to start its scoring drives, and the last one put points on the board without the offense taking the field.

The turnovers that changed the game

Jadarian Price’s early fumble gave Washington a short field for Marcus Mariota’s touchdown pass to Rachaad White. After halftime, Tim Settle tipped a Sam Darnold pass and Sonny Styles intercepted it. Mariota then found Terry McLaurin for a 30-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 24–10.

Seattle answered through the air. Darnold connected with Eric Saubert, then with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for the receiver’s second touchdown, to make it 24–24. Washington moved ahead on Drew Stevens’ field goal before Kain Medrano intercepted Darnold and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown. The missed extra point left the Commanders ahead 33–24.

Two first downs finished the job

Darnold’s seven-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp brought Seattle within two with 2:51 remaining. Washington’s offense then kept Seattle on the sideline: White gained 19 yards on third-and-nine, and Mariota converted third-and-seven with a keeper. Seattle never got the ball back.

Darnold finished with 379 passing yards and four touchdowns, while Smith-Njigba caught 10 passes for 128 yards and two scores. But Seattle’s 44 rushing yards and three turnovers left little margin for error. Mariota threw three touchdowns without an interception, and Washington did not give the ball away.

What the result meant after Week 3

The Commanders earned their first win of the season and stood at 1–2. The Seahawks fell to 2–1 as their 12-game winning streak ended. Washington’s decisive work came both in creating extra possessions and in protecting its final one.
