Kansas City Chiefs receiver Tyquan Thornton will have surgery this week on the left ankle he dislocated late in Sunday’s 30–27 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, and the expected recovery of three to four months puts the rest of his regular season in doubt.

The timeline matters because Thornton had just become one of the most dangerous targets in the Kansas City offense. Before the injury he caught five passes for 111 yards and both of the Chiefs’ receiving touchdowns, the most productive afternoon of his career.

How the injury happened

Thornton was hurt on the play that turned the game. With Kansas City down 19–17 in the fourth quarter at Allegiant Stadium, Patrick Mahomes found him on a post route for 55 yards. Raiders safety Treydan Stukes brought him down, Thornton got up to celebrate, then went to the turf with his left foot twisted at an unnatural angle. The ankle was put back in place on the sideline and he left in an air cast. The drive finished with Kenneth Walker III’s 2-yard touchdown run with 3:21 left, and Walker added a 22-yard score 19 seconds later to put the game away.

Further tests on Monday, October 5, confirmed that the dislocation needs an operation. Matt Zenitz reported the three-to-four-month estimate, a window of roughly 12 to 16 weeks. Ian Rapoport reported there is a real chance Thornton returns late in the season, which would most likely mean a playoff run. Both timelines are reported estimates rather than a club announcement.

“You never want anyone to get injured, and you’re hoping it’s better than it looked out there,” Mahomes said after the game.

Thornton’s season and the Chiefs’ receiver room

Thornton, a second-round pick in 2022, arrived in Kansas City on the practice squad in 2024 and returned this spring on a two-year contract. He had six catches for 108 yards through the first three games, then added touchdowns of 2 and 8 yards against the Raiders. He leaves with 11 receptions, 219 yards and two scores.

His loss thins a group that was already stretched on Sunday. Rashee Rice also left the game with a hamstring injury, which Rapoport described as minor. The remaining options include rookie Cyrus Allen, second-year receiver Jalen Royals and returner Nikko Remigio, and the Chiefs have been linked in several reports to free agent Tyreek Hill, though no move has been made.

What comes next

The 4–0 Chiefs are off in Week 5, which gives Rice time to heal and the staff two weeks to reshape the passing game. Kansas City returns to play against the Los Angeles Chargers at home on Sunday, October 18, at 4:25 p.m. EDT. Follow every roster change on our injury tracker.
