Payton: “We’ll do what’s best for the team”

Sean Payton will take back play-calling duties for the Denver Broncos’ Week 5 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, the head coach confirmed, ending offensive coordinator Davis Webb’s stint as the team’s playcaller after a 2-2 start.

“We’ll do what’s best for the team,” Payton said, in comments carried on the Broncos’ official website. The club did not frame the move as a demotion of Webb, who remains offensive coordinator, but Payton acknowledged the offense has not produced consistently enough through four games.

Webb calls the change “not ideal”

Webb called the change “not ideal” in comments to reporters this week. The 31-year-old coordinator is in his first season calling plays in the NFL.

The Broncos face the Chargers on Sunday with cornerbacks Pat Surtain II and Riley Moss already ruled out, as WhyNFL reported earlier. Whether Payton’s return to the call sheet changes Denver’s offensive approach will not be clear until kickoff.
