On a rainy Sunday, November 26, 2023, the Philadelphia Eagles put on their Kelly Green throwbacks, fell behind 17-7 by halftime, and still beat the Buffalo Bills 37-34 in overtime. Jake Elliott tied it with a 59-yard field goal in the last half-minute of regulation. Jalen Hurts finished the comeback with a 12-yard touchdown run after Buffalo had opened the extra period with a field goal. Hurts threw three touchdown passes and ran for two scores. Josh Allen threw for 339 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more, and it was not enough.

Six days earlier the Eagles had beaten Kansas City 21-17 on the road in a Super Bowl rematch. This one was a track meet in the rain, and it needed the league’s overtime rules: each team got the ball, Buffalo kicked a field goal, and Philadelphia answered with a touchdown.

Hurts opens, then Allen takes the second quarter

Philadelphia deferred and kicked off into a 47-degree rain at Lincoln Financial Field. After an early exchange of punts, a Buffalo face-mask penalty gave the Eagles the ball at their own 27. Hurts moved them from there — D’Andre Swift and Kenneth Gainwell setting the tone, Gainwell ripping off 23 yards to the Buffalo 3 — and punched in a 1-yard sneak with 1:09 left in the first quarter.

Allen answered in the second. Tyler Bass hit a 48-yard field goal, then Allen ran it in from 9 yards out for a 10-7 lead. Late in the half Jalen Carter blocked Bass from 34 yards, a chance for Philadelphia to take the ball and the momentum. Instead Hurts bobbled the snap, Greg Rousseau recovered at the Eagles’ 36, and Allen hit Stefon Diggs for a 13-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left. Halftime: Bills 17, Eagles 7. Terrel Bernard had already intercepted Hurts earlier in the quarter.

Bass had a chance to push the lead to 13 early in the third and missed from 48, wide right. Hurts found A.J. Brown from 3 yards out to make it 17-14. Allen immediately rebuilt the cushion, scrambling 16 yards for a touchdown — Diggs was hurt on the play — and Buffalo led 24-14 heading into the fourth.

Then Hurts stacked scores. He hit DeVonta Smith for 15 yards to cut it to 24-21. On the next Buffalo series James Bradberry intercepted Allen near midfield, and two plays later Hurts lofted a 29-yard touchdown to Olamide Zaccheaus. Philadelphia led 28-24 with 11:18 left, its first lead since the opening quarter.

Davis scores, Elliott ties it from 59, Hurts ends it

Allen was not done. He drove the Bills and found Gabe Davis from 7 yards out with 1:55 remaining. Buffalo led 31-28. Philadelphia started from its own 25. Completions to Brown, Gainwell and Smith moved the ball to the Buffalo 34. Two false starts, a hit that was first ruled a sack-fumble and then reversed to an incompletion, and another incompletion left Elliott looking at a 59-yard kick into the rain with 25 seconds left. He made it. 31-31. Our kick-distance guide covers why a try from that range is never a free play, especially on a wet field.

Allen took a knee with 20 seconds left rather than try to win it in regulation. In overtime Buffalo received and moved into Eagles territory — Allen scrambling for 15 yards on third down — before Bass made a 40-yard field goal with 5:56 left. A field goal would only have tied it again. Philadelphia went and got a touchdown. Hurts hit Smith for 17 and 11 yards, Swift ran 16 to the Buffalo 12, and Hurts went left guard for the last 12 yards with 2:41 remaining. Final: Eagles 37, Bills 34.

“We found a way in the end and made it happen,” Hurts said afterward. “We just continue to find ways to win. We play together and we have shown our resiliency day in and day out.”

Allen took the loss without hedging: “Make no mistake, that’s a really good football team. They’re defending NFC champs for a reason. They made plays tonight and they made enough to win the game.”

What came next

The win moved the Eagles to 10-1. They then lost to San Francisco, Dallas and Seattle, beat the Giants on Christmas, and dropped their last two to finish 11-6. In the wild-card round Tampa Bay beat them 32-9. Buffalo fell to 6-6 that night, then won its last five — including a 20-17 victory at Kansas City — to finish 11-6 as well. The Bills beat Pittsburgh 31-17 in the wild-card round and lost a 27-24 divisional game at home to the Chiefs. Two seasons later, Hurts and the Eagles beat Kansas City again and won Super Bowl LIX.

The two teams in 2026

Three years later the balance has flipped. The Bills are 6-1 and visit Minnesota on Monday night; the Eagles are 2-6 after eight games, outside the group laid out in our Week 9 playoff picture. This year Thanksgiving falls on November 26. Philadelphia visits Dallas that afternoon, and Buffalo hosts Kansas City at night — the same calendar date as the rainy overtime classic in South Philadelphia.

The scoring plays, drive notes and player numbers above come from the official play-by-play and game data, with quotes from postgame interviews. 2026 records are through games of early November 2026.
