Chapter 1

11 wins, then 0-7

The Los Angeles Chargers are 0-7. A year ago they were 11-6 and reached the playoffs. In 27 seasons of league results, from 1999 through 2026, no other team that won 11 games one year opened the next one 0-7.

Twenty-five teams have started 0-7 in that span. The next-closest previous-year record belongs to the 2011 Indianapolis Colts, who came off a 10-6 season. The 2009 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the 2001 Detroit Lions each arrived at 0-7 after 9-7 years. Everyone else came off eight wins or fewer.

Chapter 2

Ninety-nine points in seven games

Los Angeles has scored 99 points and allowed 175, a minus-76 gap, or 14.1 points scored and 25.0 allowed a game. A year ago the Chargers scored 368 and allowed 340 — 21.6 and 20.0 a game.

The losses have not been blowouts. The margins are 12, 12, 8, 7, 6, 16 and 15. The closest was a 23-17 home loss to Denver in Week 5. The largest was 16 points at Kansas City in Week 6, when they scored 6.

Chapter 3

No touchdown in two games

The Chargers have not scored a touchdown since Kimani Vidal’s 42-yard run with 57 seconds left in the third quarter against Denver in Week 5. They then scored 6 points at Kansas City on two Cameron Dicker field goals and 9 against the Rams on three more Dicker kicks — 15 points, five field goals, no touchdowns across the last two games.

Those are their two lowest totals of the season. The Week 7 bye sat between them and did not reset the red zone.

  2. Two field goals, 6 points, a 22-6 loss — the lowest output of the year.
  3. Bye week.
  4. Three field goals, 9 points, a 24-9 loss at SoFi Stadium and an 0-7 record.

Chapter 4

Ten interceptions, five touchdown passes

Justin Herbert has started every game. He is 131 of 212 for 1,398 yards, five touchdown passes and 10 interceptions — a 61.8 percent completion rate and 199.7 yards a game. The interceptions have come 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 1 and 2, week by week. The last two starts produced zero touchdown passes and three interceptions.

In the 24-9 loss to the Rams he completed 24 of 32 passes for 257 yards and was intercepted twice. The Chargers led 9-3 in the second quarter and did not score again.

Chapter 5

The last 0-7, and Harbaugh

The Chargers had not opened 0-7 since 2000, when they started 0-11 and finished 1-15. Jim Harbaugh was on that roster as a veteran quarterback. He started five games that season — all losses — as San Diego staggered through its worst modern start.

Twenty-six years later he is the head coach living through the franchise’s next 0-7. “It’s not a familiar position for any of the guys in our locker room,” he said after the Rams game, “so we’re the only ones who can change it.”

  2. They opened 0-11, finished 1-15. Harbaugh started five games, all losses.
  3. The franchise did not open another season 0-7.
  4. Los Angeles went 11-6 and lost in the wild-card round, 16-3 at New England.
  5. A 24-9 loss to the Rams made them 0-7 after that 11-win year.

Chapter 6

Sunday: Houston at SoFi

The Houston Texans, 2-5, visit SoFi Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 4:05 p.m. ET (11:05 p.m. Cairo time). It is the first of 10 games the Chargers have left. A win would end the historic start. A loss would make them 0-8, with Baltimore on the road next.

They have scored 99 points and thrown 10 interceptions. They have not reached the end zone in two games. The numbers are the issue Harbaugh said only they can fix.

0-7 after 11 wins. Ninety-nine points scored, 10 interceptions and no touchdown in two games. In 27 seasons of league results, no other 11-win team has opened the next year this way — and Houston is at SoFi on Sunday.
