Lamar Jackson needs surgery on his right thumb and is going on injured reserve, Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter said after Sunday’s 36-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Asked if the injury could end Jackson’s season, Minter said, “Potentially, but we’ll see where it’s at.”

  • Jackson hurt the thumb on his throwing hand on the first snap of the game, in his first game back after missing three weeks with a high left ankle sprain
  • Backup Tyler Huntley hurt his right toe in the second quarter and did not return; he is thought to have turf toe and is having an MRI on Monday
  • Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, the third quarterback, finished the game and is the only healthy quarterback on the roster
  • Injured reserve means Jackson misses at least four games: the Jaguars on Thursday night, the Chargers, the Panthers and the Texans

What Minter said about Lamar Jackson

Minter did not say whether the thumb is broken or dislocated. “That’ll be a surgery deal. He’ll go to (injured reserve),” he said. “That’s a tough deal.” Jackson’s right hand hit the hand of Bills outside linebacker Greg Rousseau, who was trying to knock the pass down, as he threw to Zay Flowers. He walked off with his thumb bent out of shape and was later seen with it in a cast.

Tyler Huntley’s toe and the Thursday problem

Huntley left in the second quarter and was ruled out at 3 p.m. ET. Minter said he is not sure of Huntley’s status, and the MRI on Monday should show how much time, if any, he will miss. Baltimore became the first team since the 2017 Cowboys to have three quarterbacks throw a pass before halftime.

Fagnano, an undrafted rookie from Connecticut, went 10 of 21 for 91 yards with an interception and a lost fumble. He fell to the ground holding his left knee after a low hit from Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver, who was flagged for roughing the passer. Asked if he will be healthy enough to play Thursday, Fagnano said, “Yeah, I think so.”

What comes next

Minter said the Ravens will decide by Monday whether they need to add a quarterback, and with Skylar Thompson already on injured reserve they may need at least one. The trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 10. Baltimore plays the 5-2 Jaguars at home on Thursday night, so the first injury report of the week comes out on Monday, with Huntley’s MRI result expected the same day. How Jackson got hurt on the first play is here.
