On November 9, 2014, the Chicago Bears went to Lambeau Field for a Sunday night game against the Green Bay Packers. Both teams were coming off a bye week. By halftime, Aaron Rodgers had thrown six touchdown passes, Green Bay led 42-0, and the game was effectively over. The Packers won 55-14.

Six touchdown passes in one half tied the NFL record set by Oakland’s Daryle Lamonica in 1969. Rodgers sat out most of the second half and still finished 18 of 27 for 315 yards with no interceptions.

Six touchdowns in 21 minutes

Rodgers’ first touchdown pass came with 6:17 left in the first quarter, a 1-yard throw to tight end Brandon Bostick on fourth down. His sixth came with 19 seconds left in the half, less than 21 minutes of game time later. He threw them to five different receivers.

Rodgers was 18 of 24 for 315 yards in the first half. Nelson had 152 receiving yards in the game, all on six catches. The Packers’ defense helped set up two of the scores. Micah Hyde intercepted Jay Cutler and returned it to the Chicago 23 to set up the Quarless touchdown, and Julius Peppers, playing his former team, sacked Cutler, forced a fumble and recovered it himself at the Chicago 32 with 1:09 left in the half. Six plays later, Rodgers hit Cobb for the sixth touchdown.

The one first-half drive that did not end in points was a near miss. Cobb caught a pass at the Chicago 3 and fumbled into the end zone, where the Bears recovered for a touchback. Kyle Fuller was flagged for unnecessary roughness on the play, so Chicago started from its own 10.

A second half on the sideline

Mason Crosby kicked a 20-yard field goal early in the third quarter for a 45-0 lead. Rodgers threw three incomplete passes after halftime and then watched the rest of the night from the sideline in a knit cap while Matt Flynn played quarterback.

The Bears scored on a 45-yard pass from Cutler to Brandon Marshall in the third quarter. In the fourth, Casey Hayward returned an interception 82 yards for a touchdown, and Chicago’s Chris Williams answered with a 101-yard kickoff return for the final score.

What they said

“His statistics at halftime, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything like that,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. Rodgers credited his line. “If you extend plays, you look down the field and there’s Jordy Nelson,” he said.

The 42 points were the most the Bears had ever allowed in a half, two weeks after they gave up 38 in the first half of a 51-23 loss at New England. “I’m confused, brother. I’m confused,” Marshall said. “We’re just not very good right now.” Coach Marc Trestman said he was responsible for the team’s play, “and it’s not good enough right now.”

Rodgers’ six touchdown passes also tied the Packers’ single-game record, which he already shared with Flynn.

What came next

The win moved Green Bay to 6-3, and the Packers finished 12-4 as NFC North champions. Rodgers threw 38 touchdown passes and only 5 interceptions that season and was named the league’s MVP. Green Bay beat Dallas 26-21 in the divisional round before losing the NFC Championship Game 28-22 in overtime at Seattle. The Bears fell to 3-6 and finished 5-11, and Trestman was fired after the season.

Rodgers now plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers. His 540th regular-season touchdown pass, thrown in Paris on October 25, moved him past Peyton Manning into third place on the career list. The rivalry he played in for 18 seasons with Green Bay is still close in 2026. The Packers beat the Bears 31-7 at Lambeau in Week 5, Chicago is 5-2 and Green Bay is 4-3, and they meet again on Christmas Day in Chicago.
