Calvin Ridley will not play for the Tennessee Titans against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The receiver, questionable after missing the last two practices of the week with a hip injury, is inactive for the 1 p.m. EDT kickoff at Nissan Stadium, and so is running back Tyjae Spears.

The decisions take two of the 1-5 Titans’ more experienced skill players off the field a week after the club’s first win, 26-20 over the Indianapolis Colts. Ridley’s week went the wrong way: he was limited on Wednesday, then sat out Thursday and Friday. Spears’ path was harder to read. He missed Wednesday for rest and a knee issue, practiced fully on Thursday and was limited again on Friday, which left him a game-time call as well.

Who else sits, and who plays

Tennessee’s other inactives are running back Nick Singleton, cornerback Jaylon Jones, tackle Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson, tight end Kylen Granson and defensive tackle Jackie Marshall. Safeties Tony Adams (ankle) and Kevin Winston Jr. (quadriceps), both questionable after closing the week with full practices, are not on the list, so the secondary has both available. Running back Tony Pollard, who was given a rest day on Thursday, is also active and heads a backfield without Spears or Singleton.

At receiver, Ridley’s absence leaves more of the load to the rest of the group, including Chimere Dike, whose return work helped swing the win in Indianapolis.

Cleveland gets Ward and Delpit

The 4-2 Browns go in close to full strength in the secondary. Cornerback Denzel Ward, questionable with a finger injury he picked up away from the practice field, and safety Grant Delpit, who was working through the concussion protocol after leaving the 13-10 win over Baltimore in the first quarter, are both active. Todd Monken had said on Friday that he expected Ward to play. Linebacker Quincy Williams (neck) and running back Dylan Sampson (knee), also questionable, are active too.

Cleveland’s inactives are quarterback Taylen Green as the emergency third quarterback, linebacker Justin Jefferson, cornerback Noah Igbinoghene, running back Audric Estime, defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr., who was ruled out with an ankle injury, and center Parker Brailsford.

What comes next

The Browns and Titans kick off at 1 p.m. EDT on Sunday, October 25; follow it in the Browns-Titans Game Center. Both clubs play on Sunday, November 1, at 1 p.m. EST: Tennessee visits the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland visits the Pittsburgh Steelers. Every club’s latest status is on the injury report.

The why matters.
