The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the New Orleans Saints 16-10 on Sunday morning at Stade de France, and the game was settled in the trenches: Pittsburgh ran for 148 yards, New Orleans for 18, and Chris Boswell kicked the only points of the second half.

The win in the first regular-season NFL game ever staged in France lifts the Steelers to 5-2 and gives them three wins in a row. The Saints, who never led, drop to 2-5 and head into their bye.

How the points came

  • First quarter: Pittsburgh opened with a 51-yard march and Boswell finished it from 28 yards. Steelers 3-0.
  • Second quarter, 10:17: Daniel Carlson answered from 38 yards. 3-3.
  • Second quarter: Aaron Rodgers found DK Metcalf for 51 yards to the doorstep, then lofted a 4-yard touchdown to 6-foot-7 tight end Darnell Washington, isolated on cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry. The six-play drive covered 77 yards. Steelers 10-3.
  • Second quarter: Tyler Shough led a 12-play, 52-yard drive that survived a replay review, which reversed a fumble call on Kendre Miller at the 1, and ended with a fourth-and-goal touchdown pass to Devaughn Vele. 10-10.
  • Second quarter, 0:00: Chase Young sacked Rodgers on third down with Pittsburgh out of timeouts, but the field-goal unit hurried on and Boswell hit from 47 yards as the half ended. Steelers 13-10.
  • Third quarter: after a 7-minute, 18-second drive stalled on another sack shared by Young and Carl Granderson, Boswell made it 16-10 from 39 yards.

The turning points

New Orleans had its best chance on the first series after halftime. Shough moved the Saints to the Pittsburgh 10, then threw for Chris Olave and linebacker Payton Wilson intercepted it, keeping the Steelers in front.

The Saints came back into range in the fourth quarter, but Carlson pushed a 52-yard try wide right with 9:27 to play. Pittsburgh then closed it out on the ground and with its quarterback’s legs: Rodgers, 42, picked up a third-and-6 with an 8-yard scramble moments before the two-minute warning. When Boswell lined up for a 37-yarder with 1:04 left, a Saints offside flag handed the Steelers a fresh set of downs, and the offense went to victory formation.

“It was a gutsy win for us!” Rodgers said after the game.

The performers

Jaylen Warren carried 18 times for 101 yards and caught three passes for 36 more. Rico Dowdle added 41 yards on nine carries and six catches for 45 yards. Rodgers completed 19 of 30 passes for 212 yards. His touchdown to Washington was the 540th of his career, moving him past Peyton Manning into sole possession of third place on the all-time list, behind only Tom Brady (649) and Drew Brees (571).

The Pittsburgh front controlled the Saints’ run game. Alvin Kamara gained 5 yards on six carries and Miller 6 on eight, and New Orleans finished with 18 rushing yards on 17 attempts. Linebacker Patrick Queen added a sack and batted passes in the fourth quarter.

For New Orleans, Shough went 30 of 38 for 278 yards with a touchdown and the interception. Barion Brown led the team with 57 receiving yards and returned a kickoff 42 yards. Young was in on all three Saints sacks. The Saints also lost safety Justin Reid to a concussion and running back CJ Donaldson to a shoulder injury.

What comes next

The Steelers return home to face the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, November 1, at 1:00 p.m. EST. The Saints have their bye in Week 8 and next host the Browns at Caesars Superdome on Sunday, November 8, at 1:00 p.m. EST.
