Most of the 2027 mocks on this site still send Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith to the Tennessee Titans at No. 1. WalterFootball’s Charlie Campbell does not. His latest first-round board, last updated Friday, Oct. 9, puts Smith first to the Miami Dolphins, with Texas edge rusher Colin Simmons second to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Until the official 2027 order is set, Campbell’s pick order follows Walt’s power rankings. That is why Miami sits at No. 1 here, and it is also why the board looks different from mocks that still treat Tennessee as the clear tank favorite. Campbell added a full Round 2 on the same Oct. 9 update; the free pages cover the 32 first-round picks below.

Smith to Miami, not Tennessee

Campbell’s write-up frames Miami as needing an elite playmaker to go with whoever is catching passes for Malik Willis. He cites Smith’s 2026 line of 33 catches for 617 yards and seven touchdowns, including a 12-catch, 217-yard, four-touchdown game against Illinois, and he compares the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Buckeye to Julio Jones as a prospect.

That No. 1 landing spot is the main break from our other covered mocks. Gordon McGuinness, Ryan Wilson and Ran Carthon, and Brent Sobleski all had Smith to the Titans. Walt’s own mock instead takes Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr for Miami at No. 1 and leaves Smith for Tennessee at No. 2 — the same two players Campbell stacks 1-8, just in reverse roles at the top.

Simmons at 2, then a corner run

Simmons is Campbell’s second pick, to Tampa Bay. Campbell notes 7.5 sacks and a forced fumble so far in 2026 after a 12-sack 2025, and he previously had Arch Manning in this Buccaneers slot on Oct. 1 before flipping back to the Texas edge. Tennessee then takes Notre Dame corner Leonard Moore at No. 3, the Chargers grab Texas receiver Cam Coleman at No. 4, and Houston takes Texas tackle Trevor Goosby at No. 5.

Three Longhorns go in the top five (Simmons, Coleman, Goosby), and a fourth — Manning — lands at No. 7 to Arizona. New Orleans takes Georgia corner Ellis Robinson IV at No. 6.

Four quarterbacks, but not Mestemaker

Campbell’s first round has four quarterbacks: Manning to the Cardinals at 7, Carr to the Jets at 8, Oregon’s Dante Moore to Pittsburgh at 10, and Miami’s Darian Mensah to Cleveland at 21. Carr’s write-up leans on Aaron Glenn’s Notre Dame ties and Carr’s 2026 start — 71 percent completion, 1,197 yards, 13 touchdowns and one interception.

Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker does not appear among the 32. That is a sharp contrast with boards that still treat him as a top-five talent: McGuinness and Sobleski both had him to Miami in the top four, and Wilson/Carthon sent him to the Jets at No. 9. On Brian Lamb’s top-50 big board, Mestemaker is fourth overall. Campbell simply does not use a first-round pick on him.

Jets load up; Dallas and Atlanta swings

New York owns three first-round selections on this board — Carr at 8, Texas safety Jelani McDonald at 11, and Ole Miss defensive tackle Will Echoles at 16 — echoing the multi-pick Jets theme we tracked in the popular-pick simulator.

Dallas at No. 12 is Xavier Gilliam, a Tennessee defensive tackle Campbell calls a riser after 17 tackles, four sacks and a forced fumble to open 2026. Atlanta at No. 14 takes Alabama receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams (20 catches, 376 yards, four touchdowns in 2026) as a complement to Drake London. Philadelphia grabs LSU tight end Trey’Dez Green at 13.

Round 2 note and the Stewart fall

Campbell published Round 2 with the Oct. 9 update. Without inventing those picks, the first-round board already shows one clear faller: South Carolina edge Dylan Stewart, No. 1 on Lamb’s big board, does not go until No. 19 to Carolina. Campbell’s note on Stewart mentions the suspension after the Alabama game and a thin 2026 sack line so far, while still projecting long-term upside.

Other late-first names include Arizona State’s Reed Harris to New England at 20, Rutgers receiver KJ Duff to Las Vegas at 23, Florida running back Jadan Baugh to Jacksonville at 25, and Oregon defensive tackle Bear Alexander to San Francisco at 32.

How Campbell compares on Smith, Manning and Mestemaker

Here is where three headline prospects land on Campbell’s Oct. 9 first round versus the other mocks we have already covered on the site.

Campbell is alone among those five in putting Smith on the Dolphins. He is also the only one in that group who keeps both Manning and Carr inside the top 10 while leaving Mestemaker out of the first round entirely. For the wider board mix, see the 2027 consensus big board.

What to watch this weekend

  • Ohio State at Indiana — Smith (No. 1) faces a Hoosiers group that also includes Charlie Becker (No. 9) and Nick Marsh (No. 27) on this board.
  • Notre Dame at BYU — Leonard Moore (No. 3) and Carr (No. 8) are both on Campbell’s top 10.
  • Alabama at Tennessee — Coleman-Williams (No. 14) was already ruled out earlier this week; Gilliam (No. 12) is the Vols’ riser on this mock.
  • Thursday Night Football, Seattle at Denver — kickoff Friday about 3:15 a.m. Cairo. Any swing in Walt’s power rankings after the game can reshuffle Campbell’s order before the next update.

Mel Kiper Jr.’s next top-25 board is still the next big public ranking to watch. Until then, Campbell’s Oct. 9 mock is the clearest recent board that refuses to hand Smith to Tennessee by default.

The why matters.
