San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw will miss Monday night’s home game against the Washington Commanders after his appeal of a one-game suspension was denied.

Adam Schefter reported that the appeal was denied and that Greenlaw will sit out the Commanders game. Tom Pelissero relayed that hearing officer James Thrash, jointly appointed by the NFL and the NFLPA, upheld the suspension.

Ian Rapoport confirmed the same outcome in a short note Tuesday night: Greenlaw’s suspension was upheld.

The league had suspended Greenlaw without pay on Monday for headbutting Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who had no helmet on, during a second-quarter sideline confrontation in Sunday’s 32-29 San Francisco win at Lumen Field. Officials ejected Greenlaw after the league office instructed them to remove him under a rule that allows ejections for non-football acts even when no separate flag is thrown for the act itself. The league cited Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 on sportsmanship and stressed that Jones was bareheaded when the contact happened.

Greenlaw had appealed shortly after the announcement. Our earlier report covered that challenge and the hearing-officer process.

What it means for the 49ers

San Francisco remains unbeaten at 5-0 after Eddy Pineiro’s late field goal sealed the Seattle win. Greenlaw had three tackles before the ejection. He can return to the active roster on Tuesday, October 20, the day after the Washington game, if the club activates him.

This was the second regular-season ejection of Greenlaw’s career. The first came on December 3, 2023, in Philadelphia after a sideline run-in with Eagles security chief Dom DiSandro.

What comes next

Kickoff against Washington is Monday, October 19, at 8:15 p.m. EDT at Levi’s Stadium. Greenlaw will not be available that night.
