October 1 update: Wentz’s Week 2 start is complete
Carson Wentz started Minnesota’s 9-3 win at Chicago on September 20 while Kyler Murray was out with a concussion. Wentz completed 11 of 20 passes for 143 yards, and the Vikings protected the football in wet conditions.
Murray subsequently cleared concussion protocol and returned as the starter for Week 3 against Tampa Bay. The Week 2 announcement therefore describes a completed fill-in start, rather than Minnesota’s current starting-quarterback decision.
The quarterback room changed again
On September 28, Minnesota announced a trade sending McCarthy to the Giants for a 2027 fifth-round pick, pending a physical. His earlier Week 2 role should not be read as the current Vikings depth chart.
On September 29, Minnesota signed Max Brosmer from its practice squad to the 53-man roster, filling the opening created by McCarthy’s departure. The announced quarterback order put Brosmer in the emergency role behind Murray and Wentz. This was a full roster signing, rather than a one-game practice-squad elevation.
How Wentz got the start
Murray left the season opener against Green Bay in concussion protocol, and Wentz replaced him. Wentz then handled the following week’s start before Minnesota returned to Murray.
