DeMeco Ryans said his lead back may miss time, leaving Woody Marks to carry the load as Houston heads to Jacksonville with Marvin Harrison Jr. on the way.

Houston Texans running back David Montgomery may be sidelined for some time with the groin injury that knocked him out of Sunday’s 26-3 win over the Tennessee Titans, head coach DeMeco Ryans said after the game, according to Aaron Wilson.

Ryans gave no timetable, but the warning matters for a team that has only just found its footing. Houston earned its first win of the season in Nashville, then traded for receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. hours later, and now may have to rebuild its running game around a second-year back for the trip to Jacksonville.

What happened on Sunday

Montgomery was hurt early in the second quarter after only five carries, which netted 11 yards. He headed to the locker room for further examination, was first listed as questionable to return, and the Texans downgraded him to out at 2:39 p.m. EDT. That left Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale as the only healthy running backs Houston had dressed.

Marks handled the rest of the work and ran 15 times for 62 yards, a season high for him. C.J. Stroud carried the offense through the air, completing 26 of 34 passes for 261 yards and a touchdown, and also scored on a 2-yard run.

Ryans also said safety Jalen Pitre is still being evaluated after he left the game with a shoulder injury. Pitre was listed as questionable to return during the game, and rookie Kamari Ramsey took his snaps.

Montgomery’s season so far

Montgomery opened the year with three touchdowns in a 36-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1: runs of 1 and 18 yards and a 7-yard catch from Stroud. He has not scored in the four games since. The injury adds to a growing list for the Texans, who were already without receiver Jayden Higgins after he tore an ACL.

Whether Montgomery needs a stay on injured reserve, which would cost him at least four games, will depend on further tests. The team had not announced any roster move by Sunday evening. His status for next week will be clear once Houston releases its first injury report on Wednesday. Every update is on our injury tracker.

What comes next

The Texans, now 1-4, visit the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, October 18, at 9:30 a.m. EDT. Tennessee, still winless at 0-5, plays at Indianapolis the same afternoon. The full box score is in the Game Center.

The why matters.
