October 1 update: Matt Pryor joins the roster
New England confirmed Thursday that offensive lineman Matt Pryor has joined its 53-man roster from Arizona’s practice squad. The move adds an experienced option after Greg Van Roten’s placement on injured reserve.
Pryor, 31, has played in 109 regular-season games and made 40 starts across right guard and both tackle spots. Ben Volin reported the planned signing Wednesday; Thursday brought official confirmation. No starting assignment was announced.
Van Roten’s move to injured reserve
New England’s offensive line has lost a veteran option just days after he entered the starting lineup. The Patriots placed Greg Van Roten on injured reserve Tuesday.
Van Roten, 36, started at right guard against Jacksonville on Sunday. He had appeared in each of New England’s first three games after signing with the club on August 18.
His experience extends across the interior line. Of his 106 career regular-season starts, 76 have come at right guard, 27 at left guard and three at center. He has played in 147 regular-season games overall.
At the time of Van Roten’s placement on injured reserve, no replacement starter or recovery timetable had been announced.
New England also released linebacker Riley Wilson from its practice squad. Wilson joined the team in July and opened the regular season on that unit.
October 2 update: Vrabel anticipates Brown starting at right guard
Mike Vrabel said Friday he anticipated Ben Brown starting at right guard against Buffalo, with Walter Rouse also needing to be ready. The coach said New England was still deciding whether Matt Pryor could be available for the game as he learned the communication and system.
