A day off the PUP list, the Bears cornerback said Sunday was "everything I wanted" after a record-book afternoon that sealed a 31-23 win.

Kyler Gordon had not played an NFL game in nine months, and the Chicago Bears had only moved him off the physically unable to perform list the day before. On Sunday in Atlanta he sacked Michael Penix Jr. three times, forced two fumbles and ended the Falcons’ last chance in a 31-23 win.

The cornerback, back from a right calf injury that had kept him out of team drills since the spring, summed up his afternoon simply. “Everything I wanted,” Gordon said after the Bears moved to 4-2. He said his only aim was to get on the field, contribute and help the team.

Three sacks, all after halftime

He made his presence felt before halftime too, combining with Devin Bush on a third-down stop of Brian Robinson Jr. behind the line in the second quarter. Everything else came after the break. Early in the third quarter he brought Penix down for a 6-yard loss, and Atlanta turned the ball over on downs two snaps later. Later in the period he got to Penix on third-and-6 at the Atlanta 10 and knocked the ball loose; the Falcons fell on it at their own 3 and had to punt.

The decisive one came after Atlanta had scored 16 straight points to get within 31-23. Gordon first drew a holding flag on Bijan Robinson that wiped out a 9-yard completion on third down. On the replay, third-and-16, he came free again, stripped Penix, and Bush recovered with 2:54 left. Chicago kept the ball the rest of the way.

Gordon explained the sacks as the product of his pre-snap work. He kept showing the same looks, he said, trying to pull the eyes of the linemen, the quarterback and the running back away from where the pressure was really coming from, and he felt he was beating his man off the line all game.

A line in the Bears record book

The day put Gordon beside Todd Bell, who did it on October 2, 1983, as the only Chicago defensive backs with three sacks in a game. He is also only the second defensive back in league history with at least three sacks and two forced fumbles in one game, after Rod Kush of the Houston Oilers on September 15, 1985. In 45 games before Sunday, Gordon had 2.5 career sacks and two forced fumbles, so he more than doubled both totals in an afternoon. Ben Johnson handed him a game ball in the locker room.

Gordon accounted for three of Chicago’s five sacks; Daniel Hardy and Dillon Thieneman had the others. Penix finished 19 of 33 for 225 yards and three touchdowns, and Atlanta, which lost three fumbles, was held to 257 yards.

The road back

The return closed a long and at times uneasy stretch. Gordon, a 2022 second-round pick from Washington who signed a three-year, $40 million extension in April 2025, had played in only five of the Bears’ previous 25 games before Sunday. He spent training camp on the PUP list, rehabbed away from the team facility, and general manager Ryan Poles said on September 1 that he did not know what Gordon’s future held. Jeremy Fowler and Courtney Cronin reported that the slow recovery produced frustration on both sides.

Gordon returned to practice on September 30 and was activated on Saturday, October 17. Asked about the criticism, he said he cannot control what other people say, only his own job. His season numbers and career line are on his WhyNFL player page, and Chicago’s schedule and results are on the Bears team page.

What comes next

There is little time to enjoy it. The 4-2 Bears host the New England Patriots on Thursday, October 22, at 8:15 p.m. EDT, a short week for a secondary that just got its slot cornerback back.

The why matters.
