Tim Patrick took a step toward his Jets debut on Wednesday, October 7, when New York designated the veteran receiver to return from injured reserve. The move opens a 21-day window for the team to assess him in practice before adding him to the active roster.
Patrick has been recovering from a groin injury sustained during the first week of regular-season practices. He signed with the Jets in March.
Friday update
On October 9, Aaron Glenn said Patrick would practice again; his Cleveland status remained undecided. Adonai Mitchell was ruled out with a finger injury.
Wednesday’s report is an estimate
The Jets listed Patrick as a full participant on their first injury report before Sunday’s game against Cleveland. That entry needs a qualification: New York held a walkthrough, so the practice designations were estimates rather than a record of a full-speed workout.
The return designation is also separate from activation. Patrick’s window is open, but the announcement does not put him on the active roster or confirm that he will play against the Browns.
Another receiving option moves closer
Patrick had 15 catches for 187 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games for Jacksonville last season, including three starts. A year earlier, he caught 33 passes for 394 yards and three touchdowns in 16 appearances for Detroit.
New York’s Wednesday report also listed receiver Adonai Mitchell as a non-participant with a finger injury. Tight end Mason Taylor, who has a thumb injury, received a full-participation estimate alongside Patrick.
