Braelon Allen broke a 22-yard touchdown run on third-and-9 with 3:01 to play, three snaps after Cleveland punter Corey Bojorquez lost control of a snap deep in his own end, and the New York Jets held on to beat the Browns 17-12 on Sunday, October 11, at MetLife Stadium.

The win lifts New York to 2-3 and snaps Cleveland’s three-game winning streak, leaving the Browns at 3-2 heading into a division game with Baltimore.

How the finish unfolded

For three quarters neither offense found much room. Garrett Wilson gave the Jets a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter with a 32-yard touchdown catch from Geno Smith, and Andre Szmyt answered with field goals of 25 and 41 yards to leave Cleveland a point behind at halftime. Nobody scored in the third quarter.

Jason Sanders opened the fourth with a 54-yard field goal for a 10-6 lead. Cleveland went in front with 6:15 left when Deshaun Watson found Denzel Boston for a 29-yard score, but Szmyt missed the extra point and the Browns led only 12-10. That miss mattered moments later. With roughly four minutes to go, Bojorquez could not handle the snap on a punt, New York took over at the Cleveland 23, and Allen needed three plays to score the go-ahead touchdown. The Browns’ last possession ended on downs.

Who made the difference

The Jets’ pass rush owned the afternoon. New York sacked Watson eight times for 54 yards, and David Bailey accounted for three of them along with four tackles for loss and four quarterback hits. Watson completed 15 of 33 passes for 155 yards, and Cleveland managed 197 total yards.

Allen carried 24 times for 116 yards while again starting in place of the injured Breece Hall. Wilson finished with seven receptions for 104 yards on 11 targets, and Smith went 17 of 30 for 182 yards and the touchdown.

Cleveland’s defense kept the game close. Linebacker Quincy Williams made 11 tackles and forced three fumbles, including one on tight end Kenyon Sadiq that safety Ronnie Hickman recovered. Maliek Collins, Adin Huntington and Sam Kamara, with his first career sack, each brought down Smith in the first half. Bojorquez had punted well before the error, averaging 52.6 yards on eight kicks. Defensive tackle Mason Graham missed the game with knee and ankle injuries.

What comes next

The Jets visit the New England Patriots on Sunday, October 18, at 1:00 p.m. EDT. The Browns host the Baltimore Ravens the same day at 1:00 p.m. EDT. Full numbers are in the Game Center.
