Two halves of a season

Through four games Cincinnati was 2-2 and had scored 97 points, 24.3 a game. In the four games since, it has scored 143 points, 35.8 a game, and won all four. The defense has allowed almost the same total in both stretches: 85 points in the first four games, 90 in the last four.

At 240 points in eight games, the Bengals average 30.0. Before Sunday’s afternoon games, only Buffalo, at 33.3 through seven games, was scoring more.

Chapter 5

How rare is four in a row?

In the official results since 1999, there are 80 team-seasons with a run of at least four straight regular-season games of 30 or more points, counting this Bengals team. None of the other 79 was a Cincinnati team.

The longest such runs in that span are eight games, reached five times: the 2000 St. Louis Rams, the 2007 and 2010 New England Patriots, the 2013 Denver Broncos and the 2024 Buffalo Bills.

Chapter 6

Next: Pittsburgh on Sunday night

Cincinnati returns to Paycor Stadium to host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Nov. 15, at 8:20 p.m. ET (3:20 a.m. Monday in Cairo). Both teams are 6-2, and Pittsburgh beat the Bengals 30-27 in Week 3, one of Cincinnati’s two losses.

Evan McPherson’s 57-yard field goal in Madrid was his 23rd straight make, the longest streak in team history. A fifth straight 30-point game would give the Bengals the franchise record outright.

Four games, four wins, 143 points. The Bengals have scored at least 30 in every game since their 2-2 start, Burrow has 23 touchdown passes, and Pittsburgh comes to Cincinnati next with first place on the line.
