Ertz is seven catches from tying the franchise mark, and Sunday's call-up against Jacksonville is his third of the season. Tackle John Ojukwu also joins the game-day roster.

The Philadelphia Eagles moved tight end Zach Ertz from the practice squad to the game-day roster on Saturday, October 10, putting the veteran in uniform for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

The team also elevated offensive tackle John Ojukwu, who is in line for his first appearance in an Eagles uniform. Both players return to the practice squad after the game unless the club signs them to the 53-man roster.

A record within reach

Ertz has 582 receptions as an Eagle, according to the team. That leaves him seven short of the 589 caught by Hall of Famer Harold Carmichael, the club’s career leader, and eight short of holding the record outright. Carmichael’s mark has stood since he left Philadelphia after the 1983 season.

The trip also carries a link to Ertz’s first spell with the club. He is the only player on the current roster who was part of the Eagles’ 2018 win over Jacksonville in London.

Philadelphia traded Ertz to Arizona in October 2021 and he later spent time with Washington. He rejoined the club on September 22 as a practice squad signing. The move followed a knee injury to starting tight end Dallas Goedert, who sprained his MCL when Philadelphia beat the Tennessee Titans in Week 2.

Third call-up of the season

Saturday’s move is the third straight week the Eagles have promoted Ertz for a game. He caught one pass for 9 yards in the Monday night loss in Chicago on September 28, then had two catches for 13 yards on four targets against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4.

League rules allow a practice squad player to be elevated for only three games in a season. After Sunday, Philadelphia would have to sign Ertz to the 53-man roster to keep using him on game days.

Line shuffle behind Ojukwu

Ojukwu, a 6-foot-5, 309-pound tackle who played at Boise State, adds depth to a front that has changed sharply in recent weeks. Lane Johnson retired, center Cam Jurgens was traded to the Baltimore Ravens and Drew Kendall is out with a knee injury. Ojukwu backs up Fred Johnson, who is working his way back from an injury.

Jake Majors, signed to the active roster on Friday, is projected to start alongside Jordan Mailata, Tyler Steen, Willie Lampkin and Markel Bell. Running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver DeVonta Smith have already been ruled out for the game.

What comes next

The Eagles face the Jaguars on Sunday, October 11, at 9:30 a.m. EDT in London. They return home to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, October 18, at 1 p.m. EDT.

The why matters.
