The Philadelphia Eagles are suddenly short at running back. Tank Bigsby will undergo core-muscle surgery and is expected to go on injured reserve, Ian Rapoport reported on Monday, October 5. A stay on injured reserve keeps Bigsby out for at least four games, and his recovery could stretch to roughly six weeks.
The timing is difficult because Saquon Barkley is also hurt. Barkley left Sunday’s 24–20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams with a hamstring injury in the first quarter and did not return. Rapoport reported that the injury is not considered long-term, but Jeff McLane reported that Barkley is unlikely to play in Week 5. Coach Nick Sirianni did not give an update on Monday.
Who is left in the backfield
Bigsby took over as the lead back after Barkley’s exit and ran 14 times for 55 yards against the Rams. He aggravated an abdominal issue he had already been managing, and the surgery is meant to give him a chance to return later in the season.
Without Bigsby and Barkley, Will Shipley is the only healthy running back on the active roster, and he has appeared on recent injury reports himself. Dameon Pierce, Carson Steele and Jaydon Blue are on the practice squad, so Philadelphia can elevate a back for game day or sign one to the 53-man roster.
A London trip next
The loss to the Rams dropped the Eagles to 2–2. They face the 3–1 Jacksonville Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Sunday, October 11, at 9:30 a.m. EDT. The Eagles–Jaguars Game Center will show confirmed inactives and live scoring.
The Eagles have not yet announced the injured reserve move, and Barkley has not been ruled out for Sunday. The first official practice report on Wednesday should give a clearer picture. Follow the Eagles team page, the NFL injury report and the transactions tracker for the roster moves.
