October 2 update: no injury designation for Houston

Joey Porter Jr. has no injury designation for the Cowboys’ October 4 game at Houston. Stephen Jones said Friday that Dallas expects him to get snaps, bringing his debut closer after two practices with his new team.

The final report removes the injury designation, but Dallas has not announced a starting assignment or a snap count. Brian Schottenheimer had emphasized building up Porter’s practice work and giving him a defined package if he plays.

The trade and Thursday’s first practice

The Dallas Cowboys have acquired Joey Porter Jr., committing two future draft picks to strengthen a secondary already dealing with injuries.

Dallas sent Pittsburgh a sixth-round selection in 2027 and a second-rounder in 2028. Jane Slater reported the compensation Wednesday, September 30.

Dallas’ wider defensive reshuffle also included the September 30 injured-reserve moves for safety Jalen Thompson and defensive tackle Jonathan Bullard, alongside Elijah Garcia’s promotion from the practice squad.

October 1 update: first work with Dallas

Porter did individual drills and worked one-on-one with defensive coordinator Christian Parker during the portion of Thursday’s practice open to reporters. Coach Brian Schottenheimer said Dallas would like Porter to play against Houston, but stopped short of committing to his debut.

Parker said Porter’s experience covering top receivers could give the defense more freedom to move help elsewhere. Dallas still has to turn that potential into a game plan while its newest corner learns his assignments.

How his status changed after the trade

Porter has yet to play this season. The Steelers had ruled him out against Cleveland with a not injury related/conditioning/back designation before the trade news emerged.

Dallas visits Houston on Sunday, October 4. Thursday’s individual work was the first step; Friday’s final report and Jones’ expectation of snaps moved the situation forward without fixing his workload.

Experience now, a contract decision ahead

Porter, 26, started 41 of his 47 games for Pittsburgh over three seasons. He recorded three interceptions and 31 passes defensed.

He is in the final year of his rookie contract. For Dallas, acquiring an experienced outside corner addresses an immediate roster need while leaving his longer-term future to be settled separately.

The why matters.
