Cody Williams’ latest 2027 mock draft, released Thursday, October 22, follows the crowd at the very top and then breaks from it. Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith goes first to the Los Angeles Chargers and Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker second to the Miami Dolphins, but LSU tackle Jordan Seaton jumps to No. 3 for the Tennessee Titans and Texas quarterback Arch Manning is still a top-10 pick, at No. 10 to the Arizona Cardinals.

That last call matters because Manning’s stock is the most argued-over thing in this draft cycle. He has slid out of Round 1 in several recent projections, including Jacob Infante’s latest mock, and Mel Kiper Jr. had him only 24th on his first big board. Williams goes the other way. He concedes that Manning has earned the criticism for how he has played this fall, yet argues the noise is hiding what he calls the “still-obvious talent” of the Texas passer.

The calls that stand out

Seaton at No. 3. Williams admits the LSU left tackle is probably not the third-best player in the class, but says Seaton has played his way into the top 10, and a Titans team that needs protection takes him ahead of both elite edge rushers. It is a sharp contrast with Joe DeLeone and Ryan Roberts, whose mock released the same day has Seaton waiting until No. 19.

Mestemaker over the field. On Miami’s pick, Williams writes that the Oklahoma State quarterback’s arm “might truly be unmatched” among this year’s passers, while stressing that Mestemaker still has flaws to clean up. He is the first quarterback taken, the same verdict as 13 of the 18 mocks in our October 22 consensus.

Texas everywhere. Four Longhorns go in the top 10: Colin Simmons at No. 4 to Tampa Bay, Trevor Goosby at No. 7 to Philadelphia, Cam Coleman at No. 8 to Houston and Manning at No. 10. Georgia adds three first-rounders of its own in Ellis Robinson IV, Chris Cole and KJ Bolden, the first safety off the board at No. 25.

The Jets’ three picks. New York uses the Dallas pick on Notre Dame corner Leonard Moore at No. 6, takes Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss with the Indianapolis pick at No. 9, and adds Ole Miss defensive tackle Will Echoles with its own pick at No. 13.

Quarterbacks and the shape of the round

Five quarterbacks go in Round 1: Mestemaker (2), Chambliss (9), Manning (10), Miami’s Darian Mensah to Pittsburgh (22) and Oregon’s Dante Moore to Cleveland (26). Notre Dame’s CJ Carr is not among them. By position, Williams’ round has four cornerbacks, four receivers, four interior defensive linemen, three edge rushers, three linebackers, two tackles, two guards or centers, two safeties and two tight ends, with Florida’s Jadan Baugh the only running back, at No. 30 to Minnesota.

Williams’ broader read is that the edge group thins out quickly after Simmons and Dylan Stewart, while the secondary is deep enough to supply starters well into the 20s. For how the risers and fallers moved after last weekend’s college games, see the Week 7 draft stock report.

What comes next

The draft order will shift again once the Week 7 NFL games finish on Monday night, and this weekend’s college results will feed the next round of boards. WhyNFL will keep tracking each new first round from named analysts.

The why matters.
