The Kansas City Chiefs gain more ground per snap than any offense in the NFL. After Week 6 they average 6.70 yards per play, 2,070 net yards on 309 snaps in five games, ahead of Buffalo and unbeaten San Francisco.

Kansas City pulled further clear in its 22–6 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, October 18. The Chiefs piled up 422 yards on 57 plays, 7.4 a snap, while the Chargers managed 4.1. Patrick Mahomes completed 23 of 30 passes for 272 yards and was not sacked, and Kenneth Walker III scored on runs of 33 and 2 yards as the Chiefs moved to 5–0.

Yards per play leaders after Week 6

Rank Team G Plays Net yards Yards per play
1 Kansas City 5 309 2,070 6.70
2 Buffalo 6 359 2,326 6.48
3 San Francisco 6 344 2,200 6.40
4 Baltimore 6 367 2,206 6.01
5 Detroit 5 332 1,969 5.93
6 Carolina 5 342 2,022 5.91
7 LA Rams 6 410 2,407 5.87
8 New England 6 387 2,244 5.80
9 Jacksonville 6 361 2,086 5.78
10 Atlanta 6 360 2,066 5.74

Yards per play divides a team’s net yards by every offensive snap it has run: passes, sacks and runs. Because it ignores how many snaps a team gets, it is a fairer test of an offense than yards per game. The league average through six weeks is 5.29.

The Chiefs lead because they do both halves well. Their 5.51 yards per carry is the best rushing mark in the league, and they gain 7.75 net yards every time they drop back to pass, third behind San Francisco (8.13) and Buffalo (7.83). The 49ers, 6–0 after a 23–17 win over Washington, put up 6.2 a snap on Monday night. Buffalo, 5–1, averaged 5.4 in its 33–30 win at Las Vegas and stays second at 6.48.

Baltimore is fourth at 6.01 despite a rough afternoon in Cleveland, where it gained 235 yards on 57 plays, 4.1 a snap, in a 13–10 loss with Tyler Huntley at quarterback. Carolina, sixth at 5.91, gained 399 yards in its 25–14 win at Philadelphia.

The bottom five

Rank Team G Plays Net yards Yards per play
28 Arizona 6 404 1,844 4.56
29 Cleveland 6 354 1,604 4.53
30 Tennessee 6 318 1,418 4.46
31 Denver 6 344 1,513 4.40
32 Philadelphia 6 350 1,533 4.38

Philadelphia has the least efficient offense in the league at 4.38 yards per play. Against Carolina the Eagles ran only 13 times and gained 222 yards on 61 snaps, 3.6 a play, as Tanner McKee completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and was sacked three times for 28 yards. The Eagles are 2–4, and their 4.81 net yards per dropback is the lowest passing mark in the league.

Denver (4.40) and Tennessee (4.46) are just ahead of the Eagles. Cleveland is 29th at 4.53 but beat Baltimore anyway, with a defense that held the Ravens to the same 4.1 a snap.

Chicago and New England opened Week 7 on Thursday night, so their numbers above are through Week 6; the Bears gained 6.1 yards a play in their 30–24 win and the Patriots 7.6. Full rankings are on our team stats page.
