October 2 update: Mayfield out; Godwin and Irving have no game designation
Tampa Bay ruled Baker Mayfield out for the October 4 visit from Green Bay. Chris Godwin Jr. and Bucky Irving finished Friday as full participants and received no game-status designation, moving their availability beyond Thursday’s practice-only update.
Rueben Bain Jr., Benjamin Morrison and Ko Kieft were also ruled out. Josiah Trotter and Yaya Diaby had no game designation; SirVocea Dennis, Rakeem Nuñez-Roches and Jacob Parrish remained questionable.
October 1 update: Godwin returns to full practice
Chris Godwin Jr. was a full participant Thursday after missing Wednesday’s practice with an ankle injury, an encouraging change for a receiving group already without McMillan. Baker Mayfield remained out of practice with his right-thumb injury as Jalon Daniels prepared for his first career start against Green Bay.
Full participation describes Godwin’s Thursday workload; it is not a final game-day clearance. Bucky Irving remained limited with a glute issue. On defense, Yaya Diaby and Rakeem Nuñez-Roches returned on a limited basis, while Rueben Bain Jr. missed a second practice.
September 30 roster moves
Jalen McMillan will miss at least four games after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed him on injured reserve Wednesday, the team announced.
The receiver hurt his knee on Tampa Bay’s third offensive play against Minnesota on Sunday and did not return. His season had already been interrupted by a knee problem that kept him out of the opener and limited him in Week 2, when he had no catches.
The Buccaneers also added Brett Rypien to their practice squad, giving them another quarterback while Baker Mayfield recovers from a right-thumb injury. Mayfield is expected to miss at least three games. Rookie Jalon Daniels will start, with Easton Stick expected to be the primary backup.
Rypien spent training camp with Baltimore and has appeared in 11 regular-season NFL games, including four starts.
Safety Ifeatu Melifonwu took McMillan’s place on the active roster. Tampa Bay had used all three of his practice-squad elevations, so he needed a promotion to continue playing.
