Cleveland's starting safety was ruled out 20 minutes after he was taken for a concussion check, and a linebacker was listed as questionable with a hip injury before Andre Szmyt's last-second field goal won it 13-10.

The Cleveland Browns played almost all of Sunday’s 13-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens without safety Grant Delpit, who was ruled out with a concussion in the first quarter at Huntington Bank Field. Linebacker Justin Jefferson was also hurt, listed as questionable to return with a hip injury.

The injuries added to a defense that started the day without defensive tackles Mason Graham and Mike Hall Jr. Even so, Cleveland shut Baltimore out after the first quarter, erased a 10-0 deficit and won on a field goal by Andre Szmyt as time expired.

Delpit left early. The club announced at 1:17 p.m. EDT, less than 20 minutes after kickoff, that he was being evaluated for a concussion, and it ruled him out at 1:37 p.m.

What the concussion means for Delpit

A concussion diagnosis puts Delpit in the league’s five-step return-to-play protocol. He cannot take part in full contact work or play until he has cleared each stage and has been signed off by both the team physician and an independent neurological consultant. There is no set timeline; some players clear in a week, others miss several games.

Delpit has been through this before. He sustained a concussion in a 2024 game against Washington, missed the following week and came back after a full practice. The Browns will say more when head coach Todd Monken next meets the media and the first practice report of the week is released on Wednesday.

Jefferson’s hip and a thin front seven

Jefferson’s injury was announced at 2:47 p.m. The club did not post a further update during the game, so his status for next week is unclear. Cleveland was already relying on Carson Schwesinger, who played through his own questionable tag, and a rotation missing two starting interior linemen.

On offense the Browns were without running back Quinshon Judkins, inactive with an ankle injury, as our pregame Browns injury report detailed. Baltimore again played without quarterback Lamar Jackson.

What comes next

The Browns visit the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, October 25, at 1:00 p.m. EDT. The Ravens host the Cincinnati Bengals at the same time. Updated designations for both clubs will be on the NFL injuries page as the week’s reports come out.

The why matters.
