Josh Allen ran for 121 yards and threw for 210 as Buffalo moved to 4-1, while Matthew Stafford's 383 yards and Puka Nacua's 17 catches were not enough for Los Angeles.

With 1:55 to play in overtime, Tyler Bass split the uprights from 45 yards, moments after Greg Rousseau got a hand on a Los Angeles kick, and the Buffalo Bills survived the Rams 37-34 at SoFi Stadium on Monday, October 12.

The win lifted Buffalo to 4-1 in Joe Brady’s first season as head coach and gave Josh Allen the first overtime victory of his career. The Rams dropped to 2-3, the fourth time in five seasons they have sat below .500 after five games.

How the overtime swung twice

Buffalo took the opening possession of the extra period deep into Rams territory before Nate Landman knocked the ball loose from James Cook III and Los Angeles came up with it. Matthew Stafford then moved the Rams to the Buffalo 30, but after a cautious third-down call, Harrison Mevis lined up for the go-ahead kick and Rousseau tipped it. It was Mevis’s second miss of the night.

Allen took over from there. Scrambles of 19 and 13 yards pushed the Bills into range, and Brady sent Bass out on second down rather than run more clock. Bass turned to celebrate before the officials raised their arms.

“That’s the beautiful thing about football: You get another drive,” Allen said afterward, crediting Rousseau’s play for the second chance.

Turning points and performers

The lead changed hands six times in a row. After Adams pulled Los Angeles level with 7:14 to play, Allen led a 71-yard march, twice escaping the pocket, and Cook finished it. Stafford answered by hitting six of seven throws to reach the 1, and the Rams let the clock run so Williams could score with four seconds left.

Allen finished 12 of 19 for 210 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and ran 10 times for 121 yards and a score: 331 yards of offense in all. Cook added 111 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, and Buffalo piled up 234 rushing yards at 6.3 per carry. Khalil Shakir caught three passes for 80 yards, including a 57-yarder, and Ray Davis returned three kickoffs for 114 yards. Bass made all three field-goal tries. Cole Bishop led the defense with 11 tackles.

Stafford completed 40 of 54 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Nacua set a career high with 17 receptions, good for 138 yards, on 24 targets. tight end Tyler Higbee added 83 yards on five grabs, and Adams’s two scores brought him to 121 career touchdown catches, level with Larry Fitzgerald for sixth all time. Landman made 13 tackles and Jaylen Watson intercepted Allen. Los Angeles outgained Buffalo 454 to 436 and held the ball for 37:57, but Mevis went 0 for 2 on field goals.

“The kicking game, with our PAT, field goal (unit) — not even close to good enough,” Sean McVay said, adding that he would evaluate everything. No kicker in the league has missed more field goals this season than Mevis, who is at three.

Buffalo lost right tackle Spencer Brown to a back injury during the game and played without receiver DJ Moore, who sat out with a shoulder injury.
