Career path: USC production to a fourth-round opportunity

St. Brown built his college record over three seasons at USC, finishing with 178 receptions, 2,270 receiving yards and 16 touchdown catches. He topped 1,000 receiving yards in 2019, then captained the Trojans and earned first-team All-Pac-12 recognition in 2020. His USC biography records that progression. Detroit selected him 112th overall in the fourth round of the 2021 draft. The Lions’ draft report noted his experience lining up both inside and outside, alongside his route running and ability to make difficult catches.

The rookie finish that changed his trajectory

His 2021 season is best understood as a developing role. Through the first 11 games, St. Brown had 39 receptions for 352 yards and no receiving touchdowns. He then finished the season with six consecutive games of at least eight catches, reaching 90 receptions and 912 yards, both Lions rookie records. Detroit’s season-finale account captures the difference between his early and late-season production. During that surge, Jared Goff described their growing connection and the value of a slot receiver he could find in important situations.

From reliable target to All-Pro

By 2023, St. Brown had reached 119 receptions, 1,515 yards and 10 touchdown catches, earning his first AP first-team All-Pro selection. Detroit also credited him with 75 receiving first downs that regular season. The Lions’ All-Pro announcement provides a useful checkpoint in the journey from fourth-round pick to a central offensive player.

What to watch in his game

The first-down figure makes a useful starting point: watch how his route reaches the distance needed for the next set of downs, and whether his alignment gives Goff a quick throwing option. Also watch snaps when the ball goes elsewhere. Detroit’s review of his rookie development singled out his blocking, a contribution a receiving box score does not show. These are viewing cues drawn from his documented development, rather than an assertion that every route or formation serves one fixed purpose. Visit the Lions team page for the surrounding offense.
