On Monday night, November 20, 2023, the Philadelphia Eagles walked into Arrowhead Stadium for the first regular-season rematch of Super Bowl LVII and left with a 21-17 win. Kansas City led 17-7 at halftime. Philadelphia scored the only 14 points of the second half. Jalen Hurts ran for both of those touchdowns, DeVonta Smith set up the go-ahead score with a 41-yard catch, and the Eagles’ defense never let Patrick Mahomes find the end zone again.
Another Arrowhead shootout sits nearby in our archive: November 19, 2018, Rams 54, Chiefs 51. This one was the opposite — 38 total points, a second-half shutout, and a quarterback who finished the night with his legs.
Watson and Kelce build a 17-7 half
Kansas City opened with a three-and-out, then answered Philadelphia’s punt with a 10-play, 80-yard drive. Mahomes hit Justin Watson for a 3-yard touchdown with 5:40 left in the first quarter. Harrison Butker’s kick made it 7-0.
The Eagles answered in nine plays from their own 25. D’Andre Swift finished it from 4 yards out, and Jake Elliott tied the game at 7-7 late in the first.
The second quarter belonged to Kansas City’s short field and Philadelphia’s mistakes. L’Jarius Sneed intercepted Hurts deep for A.J. Brown at the Chiefs’ 30. Mahomes then threw one of his own — Kevin Byard picked him off in the end zone for a touchback — but the Eagles stalled, and Kadarius Toney’s 21-yard punt return set Kansas City up at the Philadelphia 45. Seven plays later Mahomes found Travis Kelce for a 4-yard touchdown. After another Eagles three-and-out, Butker drilled a 43-yard field goal as time expired. Halftime: Chiefs 17, Eagles 7.

Hurts runs it in, then Smith goes 41
Philadelphia’s first three second-half possessions went nowhere. Then, from its own 39, the offense finally snapped. Swift ripped a 35-yard run to the Kansas City 15. On third-and-5 from the 10, Hurts kept right guard and scored from 10 yards out. Elliott’s kick cut it to 17-14 with 4:05 left in the third.
“It is truly a game of inches, whether it be hitting a block, hitting a crease, or finding a hole; we found a way,” Hurts said afterward.
Kansas City answered by driving to the Philadelphia 9 — converting fourth-and-1 with Isiah Pacheco along the way — but Bradley Roby stripped Kelce and Nakobe Morrow recovered at the 10. After an exchange of punts, Philadelphia took over at its own 20 with 8:56 left.
Hurts hit Swift for 20, converted third-and-5 to Smith for 13, then lofted a deep ball to Smith on the right side for 41 yards to the 1. On the next snap Hurts pushed up the middle for the go-ahead touchdown. Elliott made it 21-17 with 6:20 remaining.
“It was a great catch by him,” Hurts said of Smith. “Timely play in the game. You make those plays when you need to make those plays.”

Mahomes runs out of downs
Kansas City’s next series lasted three plays and a punt. Philadelphia chewed another 2:39 and pinned the Chiefs at their own 9. Mahomes converted one fourth-and-2 to Kelce, then took a roughing-the-passer gift that moved the ball to midfield. From there it collapsed: incomplete, incomplete, intentional grounding for a 15-yard loss, and on fourth-and-25 from the Kansas City 34 an incompletion intended for Watson with Darius Slay in coverage. Hurts took a knee. Final: Eagles 21, Chiefs 17.
“Whoever was going to win that game, was going to win it gritty, grimy, and nasty,” Nick Sirianni said. “The guys just stayed together and kept grinding it out.”

Swift finished with 107 yards from scrimmage. Philadelphia was sacked five times in the first half and still found enough in the second. Our fourth-down guide covers the kind of short-yardage keep Hurts used at the goal line and the fourth-and-1 Pacheco converted before the Kelce fumble.
What came next
The win lifted Philadelphia to 9-1, the league’s best record at the time, and dropped Kansas City to 7-3. Neither path was clean from there. The Eagles went 2-5 the rest of the way, finished 11-6, and lost a wild-card game at home to Tampa Bay 32-9. The Chiefs also finished 11-6, then beat Miami, Buffalo and Baltimore in the playoffs and won Super Bowl LVIII over San Francisco 25-22.
The two teams in 2026
Three years later the standings have flipped. Entering Week 9 the Eagles are 2-6 and sitting outside the NFC playoff picture, while the Chiefs are 5-2 and the AFC’s top wild card after a loss in Denver, as our Week 9 playoff picture laid out. The anniversary of the rematch lands on November 20; for now Philadelphia is trying to climb out of a hole, and Kansas City is trying to climb back into the AFC West race.
