Five former head coaches who reached multiple Super Bowls are still alive in the Pro Football Hall of Fame process for the Class of 2027. The Hall’s Coach Subcommittee narrowed a field of 14 nominees to Bill Belichick, Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan, and will meet virtually on Nov. 17 to send one of them forward as the coach Candidate for the full Selection Committee.

The same five names as last year

All five coaches reached this stage a year ago. Belichick was the coach Candidate for the Class of 2026 and did not get in, a result that helped push the Hall to change how the final ballot works. Holmgren had also advanced to the annual selection meeting in 2020 and 2025. The last coach elected was Don Coryell with the Class of 2023.

Adam Schefter noted that the group advanced Thursday for possible election with next year’s class. Ian Rapoport posted that the Hall had narrowed the coach list to those five names.

Who is still under consideration

  • Bill Belichick: Head coach of the Cleveland Browns (1991-95) and New England Patriots (2000-2023); career record 333-178 including playoffs, with six Super Bowl titles as a head coach and two more as an assistant.
  • Tom Coughlin: Head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars (1995-2002) and New York Giants (2004-2015); 182-157 including playoffs, with two Super Bowl titles with the Giants.
  • Mike Holmgren: Head coach of the Green Bay Packers (1992-98) and Seattle Seahawks (1999-2008); 174-122 including postseason, with a Super Bowl win in Green Bay and another Super Bowl trip in Seattle.
  • Dan Reeves: Head coach of the Denver Broncos (1981-1992), New York Giants (1993-96) and Atlanta Falcons (1997-2003); 201-174-2 including postseason, with four Super Bowl appearances as a head coach.
  • Mike Shanahan: Head coach of the Los Angeles Raiders (1988-89), Denver Broncos (1995-2008) and Washington (2010-13); 178-144 including playoffs, with back-to-back Super Bowl wins in Denver.

What happens next

On Nov. 17 the Coach Subcommittee picks one Candidate. That coach will join 13 modern-era player Finalists and one Contributor on a 15-person ballot for Super Bowl week. The Hall said Wednesday that the Contributor short list is Ralph Hay, Robert Kraft, Virginia McCaskey, Doug Williams and John Wooten; Kraft is recovering from back surgery and will miss Rob Gronkowski’s Patriots Hall of Fame induction this weekend.

Under the revised bylaws, the Selection Committee will choose between three and seven new members. The Class of 2027 is scheduled to be announced at NFL Honors in Los Angeles in February and enshrined in Canton next August.
