The Eagles' lost month: 2-0 to 2-5, five straight losses and a quarterback with blood clots

Philadelphia won its first two games on late plays, then lost five in a row for the first time since 2016. In between, Jalen Hurts played a game in London with a clot in his calf and found out a week later it had reached his lungs. Scroll through the seven games, the medical timeline and what is left before Sunday night in Washington.

Chapter 1

Where they started

Nick Sirianni had never coached a losing season in Philadelphia. His teams went to the playoffs in each of his five years, won the Super Bowl after the 2024 season and won the NFC East again in 2025, the first repeat division champion in the NFC East since the 2004 Eagles.

The 2025 team still ended early. It went 11-6, but 3-4 after an 8-2 start, and fell 23-19 at home to San Francisco in the wild-card round.

Chapter 2

Two wins on the last drive

The first two weeks looked like the old Eagles. Hurts threw three touchdown passes against Washington, and the defense stuffed a late two-point try to save a 24-22 win. In Nashville a week later he found rookie Darius Cooper for the winning touchdown with nine seconds left, 24-20.

Both games were close, and both were decided in the fourth quarter. After that the Eagles stopped closing games.

  1. Beat Washington 24-22 at home: Hurts 14 of 25, 203 yards, 3 TD
  2. Won 24-20 at Tennessee on a TD with 9 seconds left
  3. Lost 27-7 at Chicago: three turnovers, 248 yards
  4. Lost 24-20 to the Rams after leading by 10 in the fourth quarter
  5. Lost 19-17 to Jacksonville in London on a 57-yard field goal
  6. Lost 25-14 to Carolina at home in Tanner McKee's first start
  7. Lost 38-21 to Dallas on Monday night

Chapter 3

A clot in London

The injury started with a step on the calf. Another player cleated Hurts’ left calf in the Week 4 loss to the Rams, a game in which he played all 61 offensive snaps and the Eagles went 0 for 12 on third down.

He told the medical staff four days later and practiced in full. In London, the night before the Jaguars game, an ultrasound found a superficial clot. Doctors decided he could play.

  1. Cleated in the left calf against the Rams
  2. Reports the calf to the training staff after practice
  3. Ultrasound in London finds a superficial clot; cleared to play
  4. Plays the whole 19-17 loss to Jacksonville, then flies home
  5. Follow-up ultrasound shows the clot has moved; ruled out for Week 6
  6. Placed on injured reserve
  7. Diagnosis updated to deep vein thrombosis with clots in both lungs
  8. League and players' union agree to review his care together
“Jalen's prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery.”
— Joint statement from the Eagles and agent Nicole Lynn, Oct. 19

He is on blood thinners and cannot take part in contact activities while he is on them, which is expected to end his season. The joint review can take up to four months: up to 60 days to choose independent experts and up to 60 more for their written report.

Chapter 4

Points stopped coming

The offense was the problem before Hurts got hurt and stayed the problem after. Philadelphia has not topped 24 points in a game, and it has not gained more than 341 yards.

The second half has been the worst of it. The Eagles have scored 90 points before halftime and 37 after it, and only 24 in fourth quarters all season. Their third-quarter touchdown against Dallas was their first of the year.

Chapter 5

McKee's two starts

Tanner McKee, a career backup, has started both games since. Against Carolina he went 26 of 45 for 215 yards, the Eagles punted on their first five possessions and a blocked punt in the fourth quarter ended it, 25-14.

Against Dallas the Eagles led 21-20 late in the third quarter after a drive of almost 10 minutes ended in McKee’s 4-yard touchdown pass to rookie Makai Lemon. They did not score again. Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes, Javonte Williams ran for 155 yards and DeMarvion Overshown intercepted McKee in the fourth quarter.

The roster around him is thin. Saquon Barkley came back from a hamstring injury against Dallas with 36 rushing yards on the season, scored on the opening drive and finished with 62 yards on seven carries while also getting treatment on his back. DeVonta Smith did not play. The Eagles are 3-6 without Hurts since he became the starter in 2021.

“Football is going to deal you some tough hands at times. Can you get up and keep fighting?”
— Nick Sirianni after the loss to Dallas
Chapter 6

Longest since 2016

Five straight losses is the Eagles’ longest skid since 2016. The franchise has had longer ones, eight in a row in 2012 and seven in 1994, but none under Sirianni.

NFC East standings entering Week 8

Giants 4-2-14 wins
Cowboys 3-43 wins
Eagles 2-52 wins
Commanders 1-4-11 wins

The division is the one reason for hope. The Giants lead at 4-2-1, two and a half games ahead. To post a sixth straight winning record under Sirianni, Philadelphia would need to go 7-3 the rest of the way.

Week 8 sends the Eagles to Washington for Sunday night, Nov. 1, against a Commanders team that is 1-4-1 and lost to Philadelphia by two points in the opener. The two teams have three wins between them.

McKee will start again. Hurts will be on the sideline, conditioning and waiting for the blood thinners to finish their work.

The why matters.
